The British Aerobatic Association (BAeA) is holding its annual Introduction to Competition Aerobatics Seminar for Flying Instructors on 23rd and 24th May at Wellesbourne airfield. The event is designed for Flying Instructors with an Aerobatic Rating who wish to develop their own flying skills and those of their students. It offers the opportunity to practice and build upon skills gained through, for example, the AOPA aerobatic ratings.
The event, spread over an evening and following day, explains what is involved with competition flying and shows how BAeA competitions provide a structured and progressive path to developing aerobatic skills in a safe and supportive environment. Participants will have two flights each to fly a typical simple competition sequence. Teaching is by a mixture of seminar, ground critique and one-on-one flying instruction.
Starting at 1900 local on the evening of the 23rd Alan Cassidy (four times British National Unlimited Aerobatic Champion) will introduce competition style aerobatics, with a thorough briefing about what happens at a competition, how performance is judged and how to fly the next day’s sequence of eight figures. The 24th is devoted to flying the given sequence after a typical competition briefing in the morning. The first flight will start with a practice flight away from the airfield, with the complete sequence being performed overhead the airfield on return and judged from the ground. After a break for feedback and reflection the second flight will be a judged sequence, again overhead the airfield. The afternoon will end with a prize giving (prizes courtesy of On-Track Aviation) followed by a BBQ for all participants and their guests.
Two seat aerobatic trainer aircraft will be available for hire with experienced competition pilots/instructors, and participants may expect to fly a total of 45 minutes to an hour during the two flights. Anticipated aircraft hire cost is £200 to £255per hour including the safety pilot/instructor. The organisers will try to make a range of aerobatic aircraft available for hire, including the possibility of Robin 2160, Extra 300, Pitts S2A, Aerobat, Slingsby T67. Instructors who wish to fly their own two seat aircraft must be accompanied by a BAeA safety pilot.
There is a fee of £5 for BAeA Members and £15 for non-members, which includes BAeA membership for the duration of the event. Members of BAeA affiliated organizations who have BAeA Club Membership get free entry to this event. Additionally there is an airfield usage fee of £20 per pilot.
