Hi all,

Went to a National Trust place at the weekend and ended up buying a year's membership with my other half. It would be great if we could fly out to some of them that are further afield.

Does anybody know of any NT places near airfields, either within walking distance or a short taxi ride? Would also have to be tarmac (or long grass strip).

Thanks!

Only one I can think of is Tattershall castle which is next to RAF Coningsby. Don't know what the score is for landing there. You could also take in the BofB flight while you were there.

Penrhyn Castle at Bangor is a lot closer to RAF Mona than Valley and you can get into Mona for a fiver at the weekend when it's operated by the Mona flying club.

Perhaps a pity you didn't join English Heritage.

This house (http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/daysout/properties/audley-end-house-and-gardens) is only a short walk from the airfield.

Actually on Anglesey is the ancestral home of the Marquess of Anglesey, Plas Newydd at Llanfairpwll. Closer to Mona than Penrhyn and quieter.

Hen - Thankyou...Plas Newydd is the one I was trying to think of!! Of Course, Penrhyn Castle is on the mainland!!:O

Go North! North Norfolk, that is... Muckleburgh airfield is spitting distance from its own museum, Felbrigg Hall, Sheringham, coastal nature reserves, historic airfields abound, larks ascend, moles descend. You get the picture - there's more to Norfolk than your sister!

You could probably do a different thread for this, but there must be dozens of stately homes open to the public with an airstrip attached. I can't think of many at the mment, but Woburn Abbey (sometimes if you fly DH), Shuttleworth (more of a stately garden, but go anyway!) and Audley End come to mind.

Also, you could get a taxi to Tenterden, steam train to Bodium and look round the castle:

Wimpole Hall, and Anglesey Abbey near North Weald

Wimpole is a fair old shlep from North Weald. I wouldn't say this fell within the OP's walking distance and short taxi drive criteria!

Garston Farm is near NT Dyrham Park, where The Remains of the Day was filmed.

You pass directly over Anglesey Abbey 3nm from the threshold of 23 at Cambridge, so that's a short taxi ride. Wimpole Hall is about 10nm from Little Gransden, but the taxi ride would be twice that distance.
