Not knowing much technical about aircraft a question I sure someone will
be able to answer for me.An A320 has just landed at Manchester making
a very strange sound. a bit like a Piaggio P-180. I know the flight was a test flight
but is this the ram air turbine that makes that strange noise?

Could have been the PTU. Not sure why you thought it was the RAT, did they have it deployed? Do you even know what the RAT is?

The man said;
I know the flight was a test flightSo presumably he was on the ground watching.

It was either a Piaggio in disguise, the person standing next to you who had too many beans for breakfast, or an A320 with the RAT extended as per flight test schedule.

Take your pick.

The RAT wouldn't be making a noise on the ground because it would be stopped.

Prob PTU or galley-whine.

I was at home and was interested as it was a very different sound from usual
The aircraft involved was operating on aTOM flight number and is an ex First Choice aircraft and operating in Monarch colours prior to delivery
As to whether it had the RAT deployed as I was looking into sun I couln`t tell
and yes I do Noland3

I asked a civil question so perhaps a civil answer might be due and not a p**s take

Fantom thanks for the civil answer, sorry perhaps not made clear it was on a 4 mile final at time and was quite loud, infact loud enough to make me go outside to have a look whilst working in kitchen
I was hoping someone could answer staight way and save me having to contact
my friends from the Ex Woodford design office.

RTFQ, fantom.

KBPsen,

Hmm... been to any CRM sessions lately?

Are you aware of the mod state? Did the RAT stop when the nosewheel extended? Did the RAT stop lower than 140 kts?

RTFA.

What a320 has a rat which stops at nose gear extension?

Early ones.

The 321s didn't because the n/w was further fwd.

I always thought it was the emerg gen that stopped and the rat was still needed for blue hyd?
