When is a class I medical needed?

Example:

If you are type rated in the Cessna Citation series as PIC (P1) and you fly under part 135, are you required to hold a class I medical? Is the class I medical dependant on the aircraf type or on the operation (91, 121 135) you fly under?

You require a first class medical if exercising the priveleges of an ATPL ie. Pilot in Command of part 121 operations. Second class is good for operations requiring a commercial license eg. Pilot in Command of 135 operations, Second in Command on 121 operations. However I think all airlines require even FO's to have first class medicals.

TG, let me correct something in your post. A current FAA First Class medical is required to exercise the privileges of an ATPL, and this includes under FAR 121 AND FAR 135.

Example: PIC in a jet under FAR 135.

Squawk7777, the answer is YES, you must hold a current FAA first class medical.
