I have just been watching 'Airline' (I know, I know!) and it has featured two potential disasters involving lost or forgotten passports. For flights within the EU, and these were both to France, is it really that big a deal, assuming that you have some other ID? And if, as seems apparent, you can't go without one, why not?

EC countries can only pass between borders if they have signed up for the Shengle agreement.

It's actually called 'Schengen' agreement. And as far as I know the Brits don't fully recognize this EU agreement, hence the passport requirement, and check when going to or coming from GB.
When travelling through the EU you still need a form of ID anyway, a passport or EU ID-card.

What do you actually need to get on a flight?

1. Ticket*

2. Passport

*somtimes you can just pickup the ticket at the desk

You wonder how some people get to the airport!!! Why didn't the check in dolly not suggest the girlfreind just give it to the purser?
