Hello all. . .Going to be visiting London soon and was wondering if anyone could suggest the easiest way to get to Duxford and the RAF museum at Hendon? And the cost as well? . .Thanks

I wouldn't really describe Duxford as being close to Oxford. Its 120km away in a straight line and probably nearer 160-170 by the available roads.

Duxford is conveniently placed literally right next to the motorway from London (M11) if you are driving. If you are using the train, then Whittlesford station is about 2-3km away (slow commuter train only, I think) or the faster train to Cambridge and then the bus. Enjoy your visit.

It is about 10 minutes walk from the tube station (forgot the name)

Colindale (Northern Line).

Free bus to Duxford from Cambridge railway station: http://www.iwm.org.uk/duxford/timetable.htm

The underground station closest to Hendon is Colindale on the Northern Line.

On the Duxford front, it's near Cambridge so head in that general direction. It's definitely worth getting lost on a motorway for a bit for!. .Hope you find them both and have a good time! :)

Can you get your mitts on a plane. If so why not fly into Duxford?. .The details are on the web site, FISOs are nearly house trained (even Frank :) ), and there's usually something going on of interest on the airfield as well as the museum.. .A grand day out.

For Duxford, although Whittlesford is the nearest railway station, if you don't fancy the 2km walk, Audley End station is a better option.. .Almost every train stops at Audley End, and there are always taxis outside, whereas you'll be very lucky to find a taxi at Whittlesford unless you've pre-booked. A taxi from Audley End to Duxford will probably cost around GBP15.

Cosford has its own railway station (about 5 mins walk).. .As stated by PaperTiger, Duxford has a free bus roughly hourly, but check website for timetable; also check the website for air displays (although they often have something from the fighter collection flying at weekends) - they cost a bit extra (£16-£20 on the day, depending on the event, slightly less if you can book ahead).. .Due to the nature of the site it does take some time to get around and many of the exhibits are outside, whereas the RAF museum is in 2 hangers.
