I would like to do some mountain flying in New Zealand for my holiday. I would also like to get some mountain flying training. Can anybody suggest reliable NZ companies to contact?

Thanks

Bill

There was an article in one of the magazines a year or so ago. I think it was these people, who have Tecnam 92s in their fleet for mountain flying training.

Thoroughly recommend Wakatipu at Queenstown South Island.
They do mountain courses or you can just book and fly, as you wish, with an Instructor.
If you want to fly alone you will need a Validation and some mountain training.

See here for General info...

A "must do" is Milford Sound, only 45 minutes each way over the Alps.

Martins Bay - YouTube

Here's a short video from Wakatipu Aero Club of some strip training. Martin's Bay, McCauley's strip.

The NZ CAA put out a mountain flying CD as an intro into the now compulsory part of the NZ PPL syllabus. its very basic but it is informative. You could try and pick it up from the CAA website?

I got my license before it was compulsory but i did the training anyway, very useful and loads of fun, going into small valleys and working out whether you can complete a turn.

Considering most of NZ (in the south anyway) can be considered mountainous its a good idea to do some training. Loads of opportunities in Wanaka to fly with some real experienced instructors.

CAA Videos an be ordered here:
CAA Safety DVDs (http://www.caa.govt.nz/safety_info/DVDs.htm)

and a very good Mountain Flying PDF can be downloaded from here:

I recently returned from a five-day Mountain Soaring Course at Omarama. Absolutely spectacular mountain flying, often very close to the rocks. Each day got better and better, culminating with a wave flight over Mt. Cook on the last day.

I recommend any power or glider pilot visiting NZ to do some mountain flying with an instructor. A tremendous learning experience.
