Hello,

I got this question today and I was wondering if anyone knows the answer to it??

The differance found by subtracting the temperature of a parcel of air theoretically lifted from the surface to 500 millibars, and the existing temperature at 500mb is called the: -
a) lifted index
b) negative index
c) positive index

Thanks a lot

It sounds like the lifted index definition.

That temperature which is added to a parcel of air - as defined above- to achieve a standard lapse rate.

I have only seen it in the context of thunderstorm or convective forecasting, though I suppose it would be fairly integral to getting a hot air balloon up :)
