Lee-On-Solent Now Closed for Runway Repairs 11-15 July- (http://forums.flyer.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=71398#p978093)

Have not seen an official public communication but know this work is commencing as planned tomorrow.

Lee-On-Solent and Runway 05/23 is now closed for 5 days 11th-15th July for extensive 'overbanding tar' repairs.

Contractors will be blasting out debris and vegetation from the cracks in the runway surface and filling with tar, plus some surface patching.

The airfield is closed but the tower Air-Ground frequency is we are told going to be manned.

The grass strips either side of the runway may be available for use, however any pilot using those would need to be familiar (walked, driven) with them and have an aircraft type (e.g. taildragger, short/slow take off/land) to suit the terrain and minimise the risk of damage.

If the weather co-operates the work should complete sooner - will update here if that happens.

Another positive step for Lee-On-Solent

(The work is being paid for by Hampshire Police Authority, who had a fully repairing lease of the airfield. It lapsed but by agreement it was 'held over' for many years. By further negotiation with the MCA/DfT (land owner) overbanding is the minimum amount of work that needs to done on the active runway, plus the taxiway/apron area used by the police aircraft).

The works are complete (for the time being - there was more in need of repair than was estimated, so there is some more to do at some point).

Runway 23/05 available.
