Here's a good one for you.

Does anyone know what the wingless Comet at Gatwick is for? Is it something to do with the fire service? Is it really an old Comet or is it just a mock-up?

cheers!

That Comet has been there for a number of years. As far as I know it is an original. I have been told that it is used to train the tug drivers at LGW, not sure if that is correct though. It does seem to change position occassionally which could confirm what I have been told.

I've heard that it was the first ever comet to fly into LGW and is now static.

I think it's an ex Dan Dare machine.

Indeed it is used to train tug drivers...

As well as tug-training it has been used to wind-up new dispatchers who rush out to meet the aircraft, its been known for some to call back saying they are still waiting for steps !!!!!!
very worrying

It is a Comet 4B, G-APMB that used to belong to Dan-Air. Gatwick Handling used it for training for many years.
There was a Dan-Air cabin crew trainer, which was also a Comet 4B, G-APDM, for many years
They both had the wings removed and were painted all white many years ago.

Thanks, guys, I'd noticed that it moved around a bit and had a tow-bar on the front - the tug trainer explains that nicely.
