Just wondering.... would a four engine jet like a 747 that was leaving an aerodrome that had 1 engine fail, use a pan call or a mayday call !

If it's a heavy -200, the crew will be too busy keeping it in the air to say anything. If it's a -400 (especially with the GE -B5F engines), the calls are "Positive climb, gear up," "Flaps 10," "Flaps 5," "Climb thrust," and "Looks like we lost #1 back there..."

If it was simply an engine failure, which shouldn't normally cause any problems then a PAN call will be made.

In the event that the engine is also on fire then obviously a MAYDAY call will be made.

What DO you mean - 'Intruder'-
In a classic, we swap the 'flap 5' and 'climb power' calls, but not much else, then we ask the Flight Engineer to call the checklist and let us know what happened - much better!!
