Hi there,
Since I am quite new to the Aviation industry, is there any one who is familiar with the structure of a resume. Are there any sites to give me tips on building resumes to apply for airline sponsorships.
Is there a max age to stop applying at?
Thanks;-)

Hi there,

Always a problem to get the CV right. I dunno about web sites, but I could offer following tips :-

trick of a good CV is to balance detail with brevity.

Remember that first appearances count, so take a bit of effort with presentation.

Also anything more than 2 pages and you are wasting somebody's time(ideally should be 1 page). I have 2 CV's - a second one with all the details and runs into 5 pages, with employment history and references. This is if they want more details

My CV starts out with contact and address details just below my name. I then have an objective ie what kind of job am I looking for(of course tailored to the position I am applying for).

I then have a summary of experience - 3 sentences that sum me up for eg
[quote] I am the holder of an CPL with ME/IR with over 500 hrs experience. I also have over 200 hours multi engine time. I have passed all my theoretical subjects for ALTP

That sentence tells the reader exactly what he wants to know.

The person that evaluates the CV's probably has 500 to go through, so make sure that you don't waste their time, by making them read 5 pages before he gets to the crux of your experience.

Needless to say the spelling and grammar must be perfect.

WRT Sponsorships - a lot of places don't even want a CV these days - they have specific forms that must be filled in.

Good hunting.

4g..correct.

no-one wants to wade thro pages of your life history - except the yankees.

UK two pages max.
US ten pages min.

good luck.

fartam,

Don't know where you get your info, but in the US it's 1 (one) page max, as is the norm most everywhere else in the world.

One reason is HR types don't want their fax machines run out of ink and paper.

As for Farshad, judging from your posts on this website, I think you are very inexperienced and are looking for freebies.

Get seriously into training, get your certificates and then worry about your resumes.

Any serious pilot applicant implies they have references just by applying to a company...references to "references" on your CV are not required as you will be asked for them if you are granted an interview...

Good luck to all who are looking....

Downin3green,

Well said mate. It tends to be us Brits that insist on ridiculous 2 sided CV's. Any employer in the US would rip anything but a 1 sided resume up.

1 page in the UK too I would have said (worked for me). Remember, you are not trying to tell them your life story in detail, you are trying to sound interesting enough to be called for interview (assuming you meet all their other requirements which you have put down).

4g - what you say sounds good, especially about the grammar and spelling so I do hope your quote wasn't cut and pasted from your cv? Apart from the spelling mistake of 'an CPL' & ATPL I would suggest you don't start each of your three sentances with the word 'I', it's only that I do that all the time when I first put pen to paper when I'm applying for a job and it doesn't read well (re-read this sentance!). My wife pointed it out and hey presto.....................

How about "Holder of a UK CPL/IR (frozen ATPL) with 500hrs TT and over 200hrs Multi Engine (presumably piston?)", just a personal opinion but why use three sentances to say what you can in one? Try to write it like you would say it, that sounds better as well.

Good luck to you all, oh and a small point; name at the top in large type face along with telephone contact numbers. Address below or elsewhere in smaller.........they will call you for interview, not write, so make sure they can see the telephone numbers easily.

I got the job

ok. you asked for it.......
Farshad:you require (?) after your 'structure of resume' and 'sponsorships'.
Down in 3: fartam!.. spelling please!. I received a CV from a very experienced USAF senior commander which comprised at least twenty pages and fotos of his base at ....(secret).
greaser:'us brits'?? should be 'we brits'. that is, assuming you are not oz....and another thing..'CV's' is possessive case.wrong. should be: CVs.
PilotPete: sentances!!! should be:sentences.

I have only limited experience in this field - say, about twenty years - and am willing to be shot down, having only interviewed about three hundred pilots. most of them got the job though...

Fa...m, Sorry for the misspell, oops again, however, just because you received a 20 pg resume from a very senior USAF officer doesn't make it right...just proves that person is ate up with himself or else a total w@nker.

How many pieces of paper does your fax machine hold? Divide that by the tossers that send in 20 page resumes...

Get the big photo?

Let me have your fax number and I'll send you 20 pages of info on me...all condensed onto 1.

(copies of licenses and medical = 1 extra page, for a total of 2)

tks down in 3.
actually,I think things are changing now. bosses do not have the time to wade thro stuff. I expect my chf pilot must have hundreds under his desk at the mo. try sorting that out!
happy new year.

Yeah fantom, but, I'm not applying for a job, just placing a casual posting on a bulletin board so didn't re-read or spell check or anything else! The only reason I pointed out 4g's mistakes is that he posted it as a quote (presumably from his cv).......if you want to go down that road how about 'fotos'? How about a capital letter after each full stop? Two full stops together "..", what do they mean? Get my point?

Fantom, if I ever get offered a job by any company you work for, remind me to turn it down, I don't work for anal retentives.
