AA100 18 May 2001 Cancelled- Why?

American Airlines cancelled AA100 JFK to LHR on Friday night, 18 May 2001. A friend of mine was on board; (well, I say on board, everyone got kicked off after an hour sitting on the deck and put up over-night in a hotel to go the next morning). Pretty chaotic by all accounts.

No specific reason was given for the cancellation. Has anyone got any specific details? Probably aircraft went tech. and no readily available back-up. Just curious.

Probably total wx chaos in the midwest, as I recall. The a/c probably didn't make it from wherever (ORD?) TO jfk. Not too many spare 777's at the airport, either. Just a guess. The wx was horrendous in DFW, as well.
