Hi everyone

just wonderinjg about a quick method to work out TAS from the following

Alt 10000. .IAS 180 kts

I remember someone saying to me that you could take your alt drop the 3 zeroes and the nadd this total onto the IAS to get your TAS

So from above example

TAS = 210 kts

Does this compute?

not accurate but you can use 1.5% of IAS to add per 1000ft....

for all and more precise calculation click here

I was taught 2% of indicated per 1000 feet was approx amount to be added to IAS to get TAS, and that this was OK up to about 30,000 feet.. .Always worked out about right.

so

2%/1000 + IAS

= 198 kts

i am interested because with the given figures you are supposed to work it out.

it was a question in some interviews i have heard about

Nope:

2%/1000ft gives you a total of 20% of your IAS

180+36=216

The easiest, quickest way (providing you have OAT) is to use the good ol` whizwheel - Mr. E6-B.. .Start on the inner scale, put in the values, and work your way out.. ....you also get a lot more info (Mach # etc) by doing this, and it`s all at the tip of your fingers - literally!

The MDR method I learnt in the RAF was take your IAS in NM/Min and multiply that by the altitude (in 1000's of ft) then add that to your IAS eg

10,000 ft. .180 Kts IAS

= (3*10) + 180. .= 210

This method doesn't take into account temperature but for UK (ISA ish) it works very well and if you you work on ISA then the temp at 10, 000 is minus 5 deg C. Use these figures on a CRP and you come out with 210 kts TAS.

Hope that helps?

F.T. yep my mistake, who said pilots could read/write or calculate :)

the question came up in an interview. the usual 12 questions 5 minutes deal. just use your head.
