Hey folks!

Whats the best way to do a cleanup out of a GA with the 737?

->Select LVL CHG at 1500AGL and drive the flaps?

-> just put the flaps to the next setting and follow the fd which adjusts the speed according to the flap setting?

What do the experts think?

Cheers and thanks

Which 737?

All depends on what situation you are performing a Go-around from.

Not a big fan of the FD in a G/A situation. Have seen people pitch to nearly 17° with a level-off altitude at 1500ft. agl...

ga thrust
toga 1 push
rotate to ga attitude
flap 15
lg up

at clean up alt
flaps 5 climb thrust
flap 1
flaps up
level change

This will drive the f/d to the next speed automatically

Its true for the NG but is it on the older ones? The question is not very specific.

Same for the Classic, but I doubt the Jurassic.

Early Jurassic did not have auto-throttle. Easiest way is to disconnect auto-pilot, select TOGA on the F/D simultaneously apply thrust manually (if you are only going to 1500ft about 1.8 EPR is enough), pitching up to desired attitude, retract flap to 15, gear up then flap retract as per the schedule. If engine-out you will be at flap 15 with flap 15 Vref (+ additive) and can go straight to flap 1.
Support pilot should reset and arm altsel. Anticipate level off and start reducing thrust to hold speed back to 210/220 kts with 200 ft to go. When level and in trim, re-engage autopilot. Easy that way, tricky trying to get Jurassic automatics to play. Also easy without F/D. There is no level change mode on the early ones; when the autopilot is engaged you still have to fly CWS pitch, so you may as well fly the whole thing manually until sorted out.
Later ones did have auto-throttle, LVL CHG etc and can be flown much the same as the classic, TOGA prompting the speed bug to advance with each flap retraction stage.
Regardless of model, at recurrent simulator it's a good idea to a couple of missed approaches manually and with no F/D guidance, against the day when it all goes tilt in the real aeroplane.

If the go-around was the result of a hard bounce and the airspeed has bled off well below Vref by the time you open up for go-around, then make sure you don't retract the flap to 15 until you have reached Vref during the early climb. Same principle as a stall recovery from Flap 40/30. Wait until Vref before going for Flap 15.
