View Full Version : Dogs on runway...?

Lunar Landing

My dad was telling me a story from about 10 years ago when he worked at LHR. A 747, airline unknown, did an abort t.o due to a dog on the runway. 6 new tyres, and the engines had to be seriously looked at due to rethrust to almost static on runway.
Anyone heard about this story. What would you do? I would like to also add that the captain was suspended from work for 12 months! Disgraceful if you ask me, but i may change my mind if i get some more imput from a wider range of professionals.
Think about it. Do you stop the plane and worry about some repairs and all, or take off coz your afraid to lose your job, and prob lose it anyway when you go down with the other 500 pax and half of slough! I would stop.
Suggestions welcome...

Smooth skies,

I don't recall this one; maybe some of my Heathrow colleagues might? There are plenty of foxes roaming around Heathrow which don't cause such problems so it sounds a bit dubious... unless we get the full facts.

Many moons ago at Stansted, a Fedex DC10 executed a perfect landing on Rw23 only to go past us with nose held high. A bit of aerodynamic braking we thought but no, the Captain had noticed a large fox chasing a rabbit down the centreline and had decided that an impact on the main gear if any would be preferable to a nose gear impact. Also he stated his engines at idle thrust and the current AOA, he would not have ingested the fox through nbr 1 or 3 engine. Nice piece of airmanship, shame about the fox. It had to be hosed out of the centre bogie.
(The rabbit got away....)

Personally, I would abort if less than 80knts, close the throtles, brake and steer around the dog (dependant on size, a jack russell wouldn't really be visible but a great dane or alsation would be) but above that it would be dangerous to abort. Most aircraft can withstand minor impacts without damage. Undercarriage are very robust articles on an aircraft, they are very uncerimoniously dumped from their bays into 200knt winds in all weathers, and can stand up to the most demanding of human induced ground thumping spine jarring landings. An impact to the gear would be preferable to a high speed abort and subsequent dangers associated with it.

The hunting of foxes in this country is a matter for serious political debate. The fact that the bourgeoisie are now using aeroplanes instead of the traditional method with dogs, is bound to elevate this arguement to the top of the list at Prime Minister's question time. We in this country, would of course, use smaller planes for our aerial assault, make more of a contest of it, typical though for the Yanks to use a DC10!

Used to work at LHR in the old BA hangers close to end of 28L - used to be dozens of stray cats at night living under the floors and in the heating ducts...see no reason why their weren't dogs as well...

Stray/wild dogs used to run around in packs at NAP. Never managed to hit one.. .Could have been a problem with the low-slung engines on a 737-400 though.. .Seen foxes in the early evening at LHR,AGP and ALC to name but a few. Usually the noise was enough to keep them out of the way.. .( Edited for poor English !)

Dogs on Rwy ????

I recall that we used to fly into San Andres/. . Columbia, and about half way down the runway there was a pedestrian walkway crossing the runway.

No stop signs, no barriers wso..

The local kids made a contest out of it .

The one that crossed that airliner taking off,. . at the nearest,..won the game !!!!

What do you think we should have done ?

Abort or not ?

Many [many] moons ago, I was a Runway Controller at MAN/EGCC. On one occasion on reporting a dog on the runway, I was told not to bother, as they are "frangible". .Second occasion, I was firing the "bird scaring" very pistol at it.And the little beggar "tried" to pick the cartridge up It wenr "bang, just before he could :) . .As an aside, I once watched a [rather] plum plod chase a dog from Link JA to the Airport Fire Station. Catch it there, and then it jumped out of the vans' open window :) . .we aim to please, it keeps the cleaners happy

Totally agree with your description of an undercarriage but I don’t understand what you mean by “the most demanding of human induced ground thumping spine jarring landings”. . .

M'Pacha Airfield in the Eastern Caprivi(Namibia) once had elephants on the runway. I'm sure you would abort for them!?! :) :)

I watched an SAS MD-80 delay its take-off from LIN to allow a hare to run across the runway.

I debated the old "how do you know its a hare? Because its a hareport" gag, but thought I'd leave the jokes to the skipper.

Once had a G4 hit a fox on roll out at night.

When I asked if he needed further assistance he sulkily replied:

"Won't know until I see the damage".

I think he kinda missed my point, and as it was his own aircraft I can understand being p155ed off!!.....though if I could afford one.......!

Many years ago a swedish mach 2 fighter (SAAB 35 Draken) hit a moose when landning in Ostersund. The pilot was OK but both the plane and the moose ended their lives...

Used to see loads of Coyotes in the States - of course over there the airport police just used to shoot them on site - soon solved the problem.

At LHR, in my right seat days, had a headghog blocking the line up route for 27L c/l. Captain refuse to move, so yellow truckers came out to remove it and passed it over the fence to safety. Well, only to get hit by a car most likely.

Went round at an airfield in Turkey because of a donkey on the runway - that would have caused more than a dent. But any animal can cause damage. One unit I flew for once had an aircraft hit a hare on the runway close to VR. The hare snapped off all the hyd pipes on one of the bogies. The result - brakes on one side only. Made for an interesting landing!

At MAN/EGCC R/W 24L has been closed for short periods due to "Snails on Runway". Officially it was a "bird hazard" . .we aim to please, it keeps the cleaners happy
