Women's Institute appoints first male secretary in 95-year history - Telegraph (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/8229754/Womens-Institute-appoints-first-male-secretary-in-95-year-history.html)

Mr Bryant, a former RAF administrator, had already impressed WI members by cooking homemade apple pies and bringing it along to committee meetings.

Well I understand that he may have gained acceptance by baking cakes but will he be able to "walk the walk"?
Will he be willing to wear a twin set with imitation pearls? Can he sing Jerusalem in the contralto or soprano keys? Finally, will he be willing to bare all and appear topless for a charity calendar.
I predict interesting times or to quote the immortal Cole
There may be trouble ahead,
But while there's moonlight and music and love and romance,
Let's face the music and dance.

He can work for them but he cannot join.......

"Womens' Institute still refuses to embrace male members!"

I have guilty secret. I give number of talks to WIs and I quote the first three posts on this thread at the start of my talk and I must tell you that the part about embracing male members always brings loud laughter and sideways glances.

I'll give him a fortnight before the voluble, incessant chatter of a group of women in a meeting, drives him to hand in his resignation. :)

When it comes to men, they didn't do too badly on 7 June 2009.

A retired [male] wing commander, married to a [serving] female wing commander, waxed indignant in my hearing regarding his rejected application for the RAF Wives Club.
I calmed him down with a good malt ...............

Crikey, plenty of up-to-date thinking around here. There is a real world out there you know where old prejudices no longer fit. Try it some time you might find that women are real people too.

Women will never be equal to men until they can walk down the street with a beer-gut, shaven head, cheap tattoos, and bad BO and STILL think they are attractive to the opposite sex.

So presumably finds his job "a piece of cake".;)

I don't get it. Are you some kind of elitist who thinks I should have paid more for my tattoos?

Been there, done that, in the same circumstances ... and for a year or so after retirement I was Editor of the Wives' Club newsletter. I did, however, decline numerous invitations to Coffee Mornings and other such activities.
