Can anyone shed any light on the difference between a TRE endorsed for simulators only and a SFE? Is it related to the TRE having attained hours as PIC then being denied ,by age, the endorsement to examine on an a/c:confused:?

This is a slightly bizarre CAA-ism.
According to JAR-FCL1 a TRE can examine on both aircraft and sims. Only in the UK is there this breaking down of the approval into sub categories.
In terms of what they can do, an SFE cannot conduct an ATPL skill test. Otherwise they are identical.
