Here are some of my favourites from last Thursday's Northolt Night Shoot event.

I would like to add my thanks to Phil, for organising this great event & also to Northolt Station Commander for allowing the event to take place.

Thanks for looking.

Re the Hawk adorned "4 FTS - 50 Years"

Do the Welsh do the same maths as us?

I ask because 4 FTS was at RAF Heany in S. Rhodesia when I was there nearly 60-years ago.

How do you get to go to this event? It would've been very cool to see.

Eh  This looks very much like something we used to call fen. No, not fen. Fin? Not that either. Fun. That's it - fun. How'd that happen. Well done Station Commander. :ok:

I think it's supposed to represent 50 years of 4FTS ... at RAF Valley. Re-formed there in 1960.

Nobody has said it yet (possibly stating the bŁeeding obvious) so I will - cracking photos 7of9, thanks.

"Warmtoast" says 4FTS was based at Heany in Rhodesia.
According to my late father's log book in an entry at the end of January 1943 28 EFTS were based there with Tiger Moths.
Great pics though :D:D

Hard Bernard's correct about the 50th/4 FTS connection.

There is a practical reason behind the running of these events; they're all geared towards raising funds for the restoration of Building 27, the Battle of Britain Sector Z Ops Room.

Hope no-one minds me posting a link to a piece we ran on the event today:

Hard Bernard's correct about the 50th/4 FTS connection

So why wasn't the aircraft painted "RAF Valley - 50 Years"? - a bit confusing, especially as 4 FTS was formed 89-years ago on 1 April 1921 at Abu Suier in Egypt to train pilots, primarily for squadrons based in the Middle East.

4 FTS reformed at Heany in Southern Rhodesian on February 1947

Nice green tape on "the Fin" - I learned (after 1000hrs on type) from an old hand, who was an early German Panavia mate, that rotating the handle on the canopy handle, whilst closing it, inflates the seal from residual pressure. I never used tape again after that (and never got a wet arse again, as well!).

I guess that piece of corporate knowledge has been lost on the 4th or 5th generation of Tornado crews (I was 2nd generation)??? - even these ones from the FJOEU!

I just knew it as RAF Heany. Heany Junction was the nearby railway junction. Both were about 15-miles from Bulawayo.

BigGreenGilbertIt's not that hard when soemone parks the subject right in front of you like that is it. Some of them aren't as sharp as they should be either.

Sorry

I am still inexperienced at Night Photography & agree that some aren't as sharp as I would have liked but these were the best i had out of 160 photo's I took in all. Thanks for your opinion. Take it you are an expert, feel free to coach me on how i can improve.:ok:

KarlADrage,

Nice article, Brian said you were there & I did look out for you & missed you somehow.

Thanks for posting the shots:ok: The Hawk pic looks great.

Were some of them a bit blurry...probably.
Could I do as well......................Not even close, nor could I suggest how to improve them!

So, thanks for posting the pics. I would like to see more:ok::ok:

The one thing that really stood out for me was looking at the Chinook. Every time I see a radome like that, it reminds me of the old British Airways aircraft!

Hi BGG

Maybe you will become an expert when you grow up, learning how to take sharp pictures and maybe how not to be so rude! :=

I enjoyed the pictures, it's not yet-another-Mach-Loop-set but who cares, the night aspect makes them interesting

Did the jets leave Friday AM? I'm quite near Northolt, and heard a few noisy things flying past the following morning..

My intention was to post these photo's on here for the Aircrew to see at least some results from their aircraft that they bought in & also extend thanks to Northolt for hosting this excellent opportunity to take photo's of Military Aircraft in unusual lighting without crowd barriers in the way which is the usual case at air shows.

Fair enough you are entitled to your view & I respect that but please lets not have any unpleasantness.

I thought you were a photographer yourself which is why i asked you to "help"

Mods, if this thread is deemed inappropriate please feel free to remove.

Karl Drage has posted a brilliant article which is linked from earlier in the thread & his photo's are way better than mine as he has been doing shoots like this longer than me.

Well I like 'em, they're better pictures than I could ever take. :ok:

Thanks for sharing 'em.

The only thing that struck me is that I bet the local residents would have been none too chuffed about the noise on departure of these chaps particularly the tonkas. :E

Dont you believe it Kreuger ;)

Me and cameras dont mix. Lord knows how many pictures I've taken at events like the Festival Of Speed at Goodwood and stuff like that - although some of the static stuff is OK, either my skills at the composition of a shot or the cheap s**t cameras I tend to use dont deliver results as good as these. And in anything less than perfect daylight conditions (just got back from Florence where we went around some of the churches and the Duomo and the most of the internal shots look like they've been taken through a shroud) and I might as well not bother.

Never been much good at lighting. 'Spose it comes from 16 years as a scopie working in the dark. :}

I mean, granted, JMW Turner is hardly going to be spinning in his grave, but for what they are, these are nice shots.... praise where its due and all that.

And no, I dont have a clue what he'd do with them either :)

Can I remind the original poster then he still has not re-sized the images down from 1024 wide. The maximum size permitted when originally posted was 800x600. Yes, it might be annoying to host images twice on your image hosting account or website, but those are the rules.

The PPRuNe image size has now been increased to 850 maximum width. 850 x 850 is now the maximum size permitted.

http://www.pprune.org/spectators-balcony-spotters-corner/410931-new-sizes-your-pics.html

http://www.pprune.org/aviation-history-nostalgia/410870-new-sizes-your-pics.html

The same issue applies to the RAF Mildenhall thread

http://www.pprune.org/military-aircrew/410582-mildenhall-26-03-10-a.html

Most aircraft enthusiast forums have increased their image sizes up to 1024 and in some cases 1200 maximum width. PPRuNe has not, so as aircraft enthusiasts lets not be a hindrance or annoyance to the Mods by posting outsize images.

Thanks
