I am the happy co-owner of a Mooney M20S Eagle, originally equipped with a Continental IO550-G Engine, later modified through application of AvPower STC upgrading power to 310 HP, raising the engine to IO550G-AP standard, equivalent to IO550-N.

The engine has susequently been replaced by a Continental factory rebuilt IO550-G. The A&P, who liaised with AvPower, showed confidence that the same performance could be recovered.

However the weight & balance record history shows that IO550-G cylinders had been replaced by IO550-N cylinders at the time of the STC application.

Could anyone knowledgeable explain to me what technical, if any difference exist between IO-550 G and N types and notably cylinders? I wonder whether todays IO-550G cylinders are or aren't same as IO-550N ?

Please advise, both from performance and airworthiness perspective.
