GNS XLS

Some time ago there was talk about a software upgrade to enable the GNS XLS to become P NAV approved.
Does any one know whether this ever happened or is the only option to ditch what is IMHO a very good FMS for an alternative at vast expense.
Where I have done P NAV practice approaches in VFR conditions (having told ATC) I find that the GNS does a good job. What is the issue with the GNS? We have Trimble 2100's in another aircraft which are light years behind the GNS but apparantly the Trimbles can be P NAV approved which I find very odd.

I am not current on the GNS XLs but I seem to remember the PRNAV approval is both a hardware and software upgrade.

I believe, from memory, this was required because the way the '0's and '1's bump into each other in the hardware could not support the different way point requirements. Something about flyby waypoints not being true flyby but being get close to and then turn to intercept the next track waypoints.

Try calling the honeywell UK rep directly.

You may wish to consider going straight for a GNSS upgrade as there is a EuroControl NPA out suggesting that all airports should have performance based approaches very soon. Many airports seem to be very keen to comply as it will remove their need to maintain the very expensive ground based approach aids.

The Honeywell page is useless, when one clicks on "GNS Upgrade" page it comes up with page not available. I would like to hear from people who have actually successfully
completed an upgrade and what the cost is, not advise about how to access freely available web sites.

I suppose when the airlines have spent many more millions of dollars to equip their cockpits with equipment that was previously done by ground based aids the airports will reduce their landing and navigation fees as their cost base has now gone down?
Just in the same way as I am awaiting a reduction in Insurance premiums as a result of having EGPWS and TCAS fitted.

I know we are trialling P-RNAV (but we are not yet approved for p-rnav operation) in one of our aircraft at the moment. I haven't flown the AC in question myself but it should work pretty flawlessly. As for the cost involved i have no idea.
