Taking an FAA ATP written test in Europe?

Hi everyone,

I am currently trying to find out whether there is a possibility to take the FAA ATP theoretical knowledge test (i.e. the written) in Europe, preferably Germany, Austria or Switzerland.

Would anybody be so kind to share if they know any test centers / a list of them? I tried searching PPRUNE and the FAA site but did not find any helpful results.

Flight Safety Paris is the only one I can think of in Continental Europe.

there are only two locations left in Europe (the others have been closed by the FAA) where you can take FAA written tests, Paris (Le Bourget Airport) and London (Farnborough Airport) the tests are given by Flight Safety International, testing fee is 195 Euros. I just took the FAA ATP written myself last week in Pairs, so if you have any questions feel free to drop me a pm.

Hello mate..

To get your frozen ATPL (or in other words CPL + MEIR with ATPL theo), you just need to be 18 years old. To unfreeze it when you'll have 1.500 hrs (+ other requirements that I'n mot specifing now), you'll need to be 21; only at that point!

The minimum pilot experience is 1500 hours of flight time and 500 hours of cross-country flight time, 100 hours night time, 75 hours instrument (simulated or actual). Other requirements include being 23 years of age, instrument rating, being able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language, a rigorous written examination, and being of good moral character.

You can take writtens in the UK with FSI Farnborough. If you need an endorsement or ground instruction, let me know, am an FAA Ground Instructor (Advanced) - good for all writtens/instruction except instrument at present.

Need to be current and with FAA medical for the written ex or just the FAA lic. and for the pratical to have the transcription on your FAA lic of the ATPL wath you need to do afther the teorical test ?

Hi there,

you do not need to be current, neither you need a current medical in order to take the FAA ATP knowledge test.

The only thing you need to bring to the test is a proper identification (i.e. current passport ideally including a photograph of yourself) and sufficient money to pay the testing fee.

An endorsement is not required to take the FAA ATPL written test!

Minimum passing score is 70% and the test is valid for a period of 24 month (meaning the check ride should be taken within this time frame, otherwise the written test needs to be re-taken).

Hello enybady nows if there is the possibility ( with all requairement done and the written already done) to take the check ride for the FAA ATP transcription on your licence in europe or enybody knows some FAA FI that can do this ?

The thread seems to be bouncing between FAA and JAA - with references to a Frozen ATP. As already mentioned by riciardi there is no such thing in the FAA.
So suggest that the thread stays FAA focused as that is what it started out as or at least make it clear if asking about a different authority!

Do not forget that if this is your first venture into a FAA cert - even if it is at the ATP level and even if it is done outside the United States, you will need TSA approval for the check ride.

Yes, you can take your checkride in Europe. There is only one FAA examiner, and his name is Tom Houston. He's based in London but he travels throughout Europe (and Africa I think) giving checkrides. Look on the faa.gov website and you can find his contact info.

As far as TSA approval is required, you get that before you start training, so you should already have it.
