Hi

Always reading about people landing on beaches in Scotland while touring what are the rules on landing for example is one allowed to land on camber sands or is it just local council deciding. I know it has to be hard sand

Cheers

Barra and Solas on the Western Isles both have beach runways, but it's imperetive that you ring and get a briefing prior to landing - they're both PPR anyway - the tide comes in twice a day and at very high tide most of the runway is covered.

Loganair fly a DHC6 twin Otter from Glasgow to Barra every day, if you ring
Loganair Head Office, Tel: 0141 848 7594 and ask to speak to the chief pilot of the Twin Otter Fleet I am sure that any of the guys will be more than happy to help.

don't t know camber sands must be in the far south east, this side of hong kong ;bara is a wonderful experience, but there a fair bit of water and few hills to watch out for.the beach is cockle shell(safer than morecambe bay !!) and solid ; (often some standing water on the surface which can give a illusion of depth in certain conditions),some larger aircraft have been in there in it's history, loganair did try with a 360(shorts),try southport sands; that i think still has a licenced strip, barra now has a beacon and with gps and with tiree vor easy nav.surface wind can be odd at times, and wx very local,go dig up some cockles ,but not off the runways :=,which were marked with posts, great times,as posted ring the number ,(wash and brush up required, not for the night out; for aircraft ,salt is corrosive,

Southport Sands closed many, many years ago. Indeed it is grassed over now. Don't even think about trying it.

Southport Sands grassed over? The BBC Coast programme shown last night (probably made 07/08) had some footage of one of the presenters getting a flight in G-ACEJ, taking operating from the sands and re-enacting it's previous operations (also shown in archive footage). Possibly a one-off event set up for the programme.

In the programme 'Coast' the Fox Moth EJ was flown off the beach at Birkdale, about 1/2mile to the South of the original strip.I was there so you can trust me.

Tripacer GAPWR is sadly no more. Twas my favourite aircraft. What a performance !! She was ,I believe , employed in some banner towing down south and unfortunately met her end in the Solent many years ago.
John Mulliner who lives in Southport has written a book about flight off the beach at Southport.
If you require any more info let me know as I am in telephone contact with him.

Thanks for the title /isbn,as for the logbook, i think the paper work just got sent to the caa and the license came back with pa22, (except retractable) or some such ridiculous endorsement but it may have included other piper singles.so i,ll have to look through all the flights, from B'pool, but i think it was Len Richards ,i 'll have a look, but it's a fair old dig out, and may take some time, jcb stuff, no just looked and that's who it was. m2m

Knott End, oposite Fleetwood, is a well-used landing-on beach. I have it in my logbook.
