I assume you guys would be the best to answer this question.

How is a good and easy way to work out your heading in the Hold with wind, and the gate postion?
does anyone have have a good way to work it out?

lets say: outbound 260
Inbound 080
wind 300/25

You dont have to use those details if you dont want

Thanks

I was taught to work out Max Drift, then apply the clock method ie 15 degrees of would be 1/4 of max drift 20 1/3 and so on. Triple the drift or double the drift if the wind is >30 degrees.

The gate is moved into wind by single drift. With your outbound of 260 and wind from 300 the gate would be moved towards the 300 for a new gate of ie 265 for an example.

Obviously you would have this planned before flight to give you a reasonable chance in the air.

Obviously you would have this planned before flight to give you a reasonable chance in the air. Nice - in theory!

Just an observation. In the real world you pitch up at your Destination and, oh hell, an approach ban just been slapped in place and the nice App Controller cordially invites you to join the growing "Hold party" at whatever level, dress - smart Uniform, no food or drink provided.

No nice FMS or GPS with hold overlay (???) on the piston twin I used to fly. Obviously planned? You what? You run with as it is - and hope that you don't provide the App Controller with too much entertainment as he watches you toddle approximately round the "hold" where, the only time you are really sure where you are, is when the needle suddenly changes from "aheadish" to "asternish". :hmm:

Amazing how the IRT simply does not prepare you for the realities of flying the Line. IR training simply prepares you for the IRT! The realities get learned on-the-job with pax blissfully unaware of your mutterings up front! Still, pre-planning is the only way to keep the IRE happy!

Just felt like a mini-rant there! Feel much better now!

Cheers, H 'n' H

Totally agree! The IR course is a dress rehearsal for the IRT, but a lot of tests are.
But the planning for the IR course routes is possible so do it well and fingers crossed the forecast wind is not to far off the mark:E

max drift is the best way as described:ok:
