Sad Bulldog Engine - any ideas on sourcing a better one?

One of my lovely Bulldogs started looking very ugly on Annual - long story short it needs a fair amount of work, including a new Crankshaft. New one from Lycoming is a staggering £10,470 - flipping heck. Also needs crankcase skim and bore, all gears at the back replacing, another £3k. Amount of work to be done means that the engine would have its overhaul at the same time, putting the total cost in the region of £25k - which I can't help notice is not that far off a Bulldog approaching the end of its fatigue life.

SO - if anybody has any brilliant ideas, or happens to know of a nearly new Lycoming IO360 A1 B6 that could be made available, I would be very grateful to hear from them!

The only problem with buying a time expired Buldog airframe is that the engine might be the brother of the one you have now!

If you do go down that road I might well be interested in the airframe, a few bolts and a bit of reaming of holes and it will be as good as new......... I jest of course!

A brand new engine from Vans Aircraft (plus the Empenage Kit & Video you need to buy to be able to buy the engine from Vans! :O) is only £28,000 plus shipping.

Might sound odd but try Stapleford Flight Centre stores for a crankshaft, they are a Cessna spares dealer and I sourced a crankshaft for one of our Cessnas from Cessna and even though it was a genuine Lycoming part, buying through Cessna knocked off over a grand.

This one might be a possibility for parts etc, though it has had a prop strike so would need stripping and inspecting, you would need to check how bad the strike was before you considered it and if the parts would match though.... it could end up as an expensive error.

Hi Greeners - sorry to hear about the duff donk. Just a thought, though. Given the number of aircraft you operate and the importance of keeping them in the air as much as possible, wouldn't it be a good idea to have a spare engine on the shelf? Failing a complete engine, get a bottom end zeroed and buy cylinders only when you need a new engine.

That should keep the jets airborne.

This firm (http://www.factoryengines.com/) sells rebuilt engines but they also probably (unofficially) sell new ones at cost-plus.
