Firstly:

1) When do they use 23L/06R? Is it just for takeoffs? And is it true that Manchester reverts to using just 23R/06L between 12-1500?

2) Is 118.62 for departures and 119.4 for arrivals?

3) There are two ground frequencies, 121.85 and 125.37. Are they both used?

In general I think they would use 23L just for take offs and 06R for landings other wise the aircraft would have to taxi up and down the runway reducing available slots. As just SLF I stand to be corrected, nicely please!!!:\

1) 23L generally take-offs and 05R landings except 1200-1500. Obviously exceptions if runway maintenance ongoing and SQ 777 has been known to use 05R for departure when near Max Take Off Weight. - something to do with gradients and obstacles.
2) 118.62 is for 23R/05L and 119.4 for 23L/05R
3) I was surprised by the ref to 125.37 but it is there in the info. Never heard it used though. They use 121.7 for Delivery and then 121.85 for Ground

(I think I passed the trick question with ref to 06 & 23 - the runway's not that bent :})

If you were using 23L for take-offs & 05R for landings then things could get very messy very quickly!

As well as runway/instrument maintenance which was outlined above, I believe MAN also tries to use 23L/05R for emergency/priority landings where the aircraft are a little further away from the terminal and other parked aircraft, in case the worst occurs.

So just to get this straight:
WESTERLY (23) ops: 23L for t/o 23R for LDG
23R for T/O & LDG between 12-1500

EASTERLY OPS: 05L for t/o 05L for LDG
05L for BOTH between 12-1500

Does that sound right?

We have herd about curved runways - extend the idea to its logical conclusion - Circular runways - infinite TORA - you might need some very strong ropes though ! Imagine a slingshot SID - Oh well back to my medication -

Im always waving at the spotters too but never get a second glace! maybe if i painted a reg on my hand they would look and write it down! something like

I recall hearing from somewhere around the time the second runway opened that with a pair of parallel runways in operation, landings are generally on the one that are seen first from the air, takeoffs from the other one.

With the layout at Manchester, that means takeoffs are normally on xxL, landings on xxR.

My kids love it when they get a wave from the cockpit...the spottery types on the other hand look at the happy smiling kids as some sort of intrusion on their spottery goings-on! ;)

JonF you're absolutely correct, there isn't a full-length taxiway on that runway so it was designed to be used for 23L departures and 05R arrivals.

AircraftOperations - I think that if an emergency a/c landed and blocked a runway, it would be better to still have 23R available with the decent taxiway system etc
