notice to airmen

At the stock exchange they stopped the trade with SAS shares around noon .
They where up 11% in just a few hours, speculation in the Scandinavian media was that LH was going to buy it.

i can confirm it:

The rumour is SAS shares are suspended....

Heard on the grapevine than LH might want to buy them (for what one asks) but this is an unconfirmed rumour as opposed to the confirmed rumour about the SAS shares being suspended.

However, it s a secret, so i'd appreciate it if you kept it hush hush

Which would mean of course, LH would own 50% minus one share of bmi :}

The shares are released for trade again and went up another 3% i believe. Swedish TV media have said nothing about it (or I must have missed it...). There was a notice on text TV that SAS confirms discussions about a future decision. Nothing involving LH whatsoever though. So that is an unconfirmed rumour. Another rumour is that Aeroflot is interested. Yay.

Lufthansa seems to be on buying spree (Swiss, jetBlue, Brussels, Austrian, SAS, BMI maybe). Haven;t seen anything like this since Swissair bought all those airlines in the nineties.

Todays, Saturday, Financial Times has an article on the status of LH buying into SAS, Swiss Air style. Lets see if any banks left around next week for them to get finances from:rolleyes:

LH to buy SAS will be SAS only way of survival.

SAS is out of cash, options and a sound management. LH can but a very strong PR company in the name of SAS and will become really big in Scandinavia.

Its all about the money; cash is king

Non-pilot, SLF...........

SAS shoot themselves, wrong policies towards the paying public.

Come on any airline that operates a 737 with 1 row of economy seats is taking the Michael.

I worked for SAS on the commercial side '85-'94.

Jan Carlson, former CEO, predicted circa 1986 that, come 2000-onwards, SAS would either be the lead member of a megacarrier, be a minor feeder carrier, or either close, or be taken over by someone else. He was confident that there would be only 3 to 5 major airline groups in Europe in the early 21st century.

He masterminded the SAS renaissance circa 1983/4, which was copied by airlines worldwide. Give credit to the gentleman, what he predicted has, more or less, come to pass.

And give SAS their due - at one point in the mid-eighties, they were number three in profitability, yet only number 11/12 in passengers carried. Their yield was the envy of the world.

Surrendering to LH is a sad step for a once proud and innovative airline, one I was utterly proud to work for.

Surrender? Sloblock. Running out of cash and options - LH could/would rescue them.

Absolutely. When LH took a share of Austrian in the early 'nineties, we described that as the "New Anschluss".

Carlson was far from blindly "Scandinaviocentric", and realised that Copenhagen was no Amsterdam, stuck out on the rim of Europe, and that something had to happen to allow them to play a more central role in a European traffic system. Sadly, that "something" seems to be, finally, a marriage to LH.

Now, if SAS had managed to buy BCal....

The present panic in the world financial markets make such a big operation impossible... First of all, things should calm down a bit.

Once the markets are ready (if ever), the operation could perhaps be resumed. A very important point is the liabilities derived from the Spanair accident. At the present stage, the investigation points out to two human errors; of the pilots, forgetting to configurate the plane for takeoff) and possibly, of the technical servicing of the plane.

In the case of a takeover, who is going to take charge of that BIG liability? Lufthansa? I very much doubt it...

And three different types of short-haul aircraft - 737, MD80 and A321....

Not exactly cost-efficient for crewing, engineering, spares, outstation support, etc....So no surprise that times are tough at SK.....

But a question - are each of the three fleets allocated to a single base and does each country have a seperate Management Team.... which would make it easier for LH to asset strip the ' whole ' by flogging off the Norwegian bit ?

And talking of which - how do LH ( and for that matter AF / KLM ) manage to avoid the EU Regulatory and Competition laws and their consumer market monopoly position time and time again ?

Don't LH already have a monopoly on Germany > Switzerland traffic ? And AF / KLM on France > Netherlands traffic ? If LH do take control of SK, add also monopoly on Sweden / Denmark / Norway > Germany / Switzerland

More worryingly, LH already have a virtual stanglehold on Central Western Europe through both ownership and code-share...And if they do take control or ownership of all or any of SK, OS, AZ, and BM, as we keep reading and hearing, to go with the already done deal for SN, who will be left ?

I mention this because every time poor BA announce an intended merger / alliance / whatever they're calling it this time, they seem to be faced with a barrage of ' can't do this / can't do that / got to give up this / got to give up that ' from Brussels....And, of course, the guy with the beard and doubtful taste in pullovers if anything might affect his own cherry-picked market...

I'm not a BA lover ( not even British !) but it seems to me that BA have either incompetent Managers and Lobbyists dealing with the Brussels mafia, or are simply not paying enough ' kaboosh ' into the right hands up there....

Serious answers only, please.....

It is really simple BA is a British Carrier, not a European Carrier. There is a lot of latent anti British feeling in Europe corporate wise, especially from FRA. I've seen it within a well known aviation support corporation! Britain is not seen as part of Europe by the French, Germans etc. Lets leave it at that, the accounting in BRU discounts the UK in all respects. Just look at the fishing quotas! Hey don't leave out the bollocks input of so called illegal money to various so called state airlines. Wake up, have the UK received any of these state funds in aviation arenas?

It is actually five shorthaul types.SAS was 2004 dived up in three national carriers plus one intercont company with four separate management teams.
Above the national CEO there is the group CEO and his management team plus Spanair and Blue 1 management teams.

When the company was dived Norway was given B 737 AND F50 plus the competing company Braathens that was bought.

Sweden got MD 80 and a few 737 plus Q400. Spanair was given the flights to and from Sweden Spain traffic. Blue 1 got the traffic to Finland
plus the MD90.

Denmark got A321 MD80 plus Q400. There was alot of money spent on people forced to change aircraft type.
Norway had its own AOC from the start since they used Braathens.
SAS Denmark and SAS Sweden and SAS intercont get their AOC this year.

Regarding the Brussel mafia I beleive they are looking at what is happening in the states with a few megacarriers. Also what
going on in Dubai where they forming a couple of megacarriers with help of oil money. very hard competition for the Europeans.
So I believe BA can merge or buy another airline now.
