Crash Fire Rescue Airport Categories

Could anybody explain the different categories for airports in regards to CFR (Crash Fire and Rescue).
I believe Cat 7 is for commercial jet aircraft and a Cat 4 is for emergency services that could be provided only for aircraft of the size of a Dash-8 or smaller.
A link or any info would be greatly appreciated.:cool:

google "boeing rescue fire fighting categories" and you will have a chart with the FAA and ICAO requirements. I don't think you will get very high cats in DRC/RDC.

Requirements vary according to aircraft type e.g the B757-200 has an RFFS of 7, the B757-300 an RFFS of 8, etc.

If memory serves me correctly, ICAO Annexe 14 is the definitive document about CFR categories and many other things, but it's well set out in CAP 168 as already mentioned.

If I'm wrong I've no doubt someone will tell us.


I just looked it up -- ICAO sell Annexe 14 for $129. Your nearest airport should have a copy in its library..."should" is the operative word.

Cat 7 would accomodate a 757-200 or a 767-200 but not the -300 of either types (they need Cat 8). A330-200s, DC-8s, DC-10s need Cat 8 while 330-300, 747s, 764s, 777s and MD-11 need Cat 9. If I remember well, FZAA is only Cat 7 so SN Brussels and all the big cargo operators should not be operating there.

Cat 4 will only cater to medium turbo-props and light jets.

'The categories are based on the amount of extinguishing agent that the fire services can apply, and how fast they can apply it. Obviously larger aircraft = more fuel = bigger fire = more agent needed.

All the info has been very helpful but does anybody know of a document that lists the RFF category assigned to the airports in DRC. I really need the RFF category for these airports in DRC:FZQA, FZEA, FZWA, FZUA, FZOA, FZIC, FZFD, FZFK, AND FZJH.

If you use the Jeppesen route manual, you simply find them in the airport directory in the first JEPP-Binder of the respective coverage area, along with the stated tables, including a list of corresponding a/c types. For other chart suppliers I don´t know, but I guess there should be something similar.

Otherwise they should be in your equivalent of the UK Air Pilot, ie the document published by the Civil Aviation authority in your country, listing all licensed airfields with details of each one.

This is the source of the information published by Jeppesen, and others like them.
