Where to find good MEP FI's?

Guys, I am after a little advice from all you pilot types out there!

As you can probably tell from my username, I am an engineer (sorry) but recently took a career change, and right now I am :ugh: trying to find good MEP flying instructors in my new lease of life!

I dont want to advertise as I am not allowed to - but some good advice from where you guys look for work would be very welcome!

Be suprised if theres many out there.

I know when the CAA brought out the 70 P.1 rule that seemed to kill off the multi instruction i did. And perhaps the currency of many instructors, so i think that was a backward step for safety. Still grounded a lot of twins so the accident stats. will look good.

By the time the average PPL had clocked up 70 P.1 they had lost interest or motivation to advance their skills.

Plus outside IRI school just too expensive to operate.

Firstly, a "good" instructor is usually a subjective thing based on your own personality and experience/comfort level.

Secondly, many non IR schools operate twins - just look around near to you.

A better question would be what twin is best from a learning perspective?

Try Flying Club Conington at EGSF.... Google will get you their number. They run their training on a Duchess (very good value for money) and their ME Instructor is excellent.

7-10 MEP instructors implies a pretty substantial operation, if it's full time work. 100-150 MEP/IR students a year! Where you advertise depends on where you want them to work. If it's the the UK, advertising here or in Flight would get you noticed. If it's the size of operation your implying most of the aviation media would be interested in running editorial. Which would help.

r44flyer, yes i am looking for guys for Coventry also - but the bulk of the guys I need are for out of the UK, but still JAA approved schools.

They are big outfits - all of them multi-national! Earning potential for them is around £70 - £80,000 GBP per year!

If your trying to run just a hour build program, i don't suppose ya got use for a FAA instructor? :} (assuming thats even possible under UK regs :E)

but to be honest there is nothing wrong with a FAr ticket with 3000 hours FAR 25 time PIC (Thats signing for the aircaft in the techlog)

I would say you will be lucky to get 7-10 independant mep instructors of decent quality in the whole of the uk.

I have only met 3 who had a clue what they were doing.

Briggs in Humberside who apart from having issues with flying at night at least knew what he was talking about.

For that money what are you looking for? as a 3000hour TP skipper who has a lapsed full FI JAA rating less than 5 years. Please tell more if I can link it in with a summer season with less than 90 days in the UK and instruct during the winter somewhere warm I am game.

The bloke that does all the trilander checkouts in CI is pretty good.

The trilander skipper who is a FIE who I have only met on the bus up from town knows his stuff don't ask just accept no need for a check flight.

Its a pish system just by reading I would have to go and do time in a MEP as PIC just to do the FI rating. All for rpm high and mix rich. Instead of RPM's 100% in a turbo prop. And I have to do a course in dealing with pish approaches by FO's.....

Mad_jock I am not being slow here (I hope) but is there a slim chance you could translate the heavy typed italics into English, you will have to remember I am not a member of the 2 wing master race like yourself!

Matt, I do have use for an FAA FI, but only Stateside!

Is this a start-up you're embarking on, starflex?

It'll be 2 or 3 years before I'm looking to be based in the Midlands again, but it'll be nice to know more options are developing for the career instructor. Incidentally, I'm looking to do my FI rating with Kevin Rowell up at Sherburn, and once again I hear good things.

r44flyer - No not a new start-up, one set of instructors are needed for a big expansion plan, and the others are just to cover dead wood, natural wastage etc.......finding lately alot of guys getting FI rating, getting hours and making off to the airlines!! I suppose this is only natural progression, but is frustrating all the same.

I can do everything except mcc courses and type ratings. So far all my students passed at first attempt.
