Hi All.

Here are a couple of shots from the trip yesterday with the BBMF and 19's special Hawk.
Thanks to all for making it work.

Richard.

Totally agree. Fabulous shots.

The first one would be a classic in the Caption Competition thread.

The two Hawk guys looking at the Spit.................................

19 Sqn Hawk truly does look fabulous but I don't like the '19' on the fin, it just doesn't look right - anyone agree/disagree? Great pics though WOW!!!

Why not just the blue and red roundels on the wings, like the Spit has? Any ideas?

Op_Twenty. I agree that those colours and markings aren't very exciting but they are authentic. Hoist BRAVO ZULU for 19.

What a great colour scheme for the Hawk. Congratulations for all those involved - especially with the amount of hurdles that had to be jumped to 'make it so'.

A good historical theme to the paint job. Interestingly the diameter of the red circle on the Spitfire fuselage roundel has not been replicated by the Hawk. This occurred to the RNHF Sea Fury and I don't think was spotted for a while. Doesn't detract from a good job and great photos :ok:

Stunning shots - I love the last one where it looks like they are about to split.

And as much as I think the Hawk is a pretty aeroplane - especially when given a 'proper' military paintscheme, the Spit really does make your heart melt and think of a glamorous blonde in a slinky dress purring away at a cocktail party, with the rest of the room hanging on every word.

Ah well, born 50 years too late ... bugger.

seafuryfan. I think 19 has just pioneered the D1 roundel. You are right, though, that an A1 would have iced the cake.

Any objections Ricko if I make one of your photos the new background on my laptop? Bloody brilliant photos. :D

Ricko: Some people are just born bloody lucky! Great photos; well done.

Melchett01: 25 years too late in my case; old bugger. Should we be asking Cliff on the WWII pilot's brevet thread about any slinky blondes he may have met? Once he's spilled the beans about his training, that is.

Think how the poor studes on 19 feel when they see the bounce walking to that jet! Bit of a late tally I suspect;)!

Maybe it's just me but I think it looks horrible. Okay, it's an authentic scheme and it was nice idea, but to me it looks as naff as all the other "air show" schemes applied to the Hawk. Personally, if an amusing repaint is on the cards, I would have gone for the original post-delivery red/white/grey scheme or the grey/green tactical camouflage. Having said that, I'd be fascinated to see what the Hawk would have looked like in the two trainer schemes which had been abandoned before the Hawk came along, ie the silver scheme with yellow trainer bands, and of course the lovely light grey scheme with dayglow strips! But dressing an advanced trainer up as a Spitfire? Nah!:)

1 and 2 are nice shots. Nice work, Richard! Shame that 3 has lots of motion blur; but at 125/sec and f8 there's not much else you could have done without freezing the prop.

I join Tim as one of the minority on the Hawk scheme - it's just a little too tacky for my liking.

Now we are getting picky aren't we....:hmm:

Outstanding work mate, well done! :ok:

Aye, all credit to Ricko for getting some photos, it's just the colour scheme that I don't care for. Air-to-air photographs are (contrary to popular belief) tricky at the best of times, but this combo is a particular problem, when you're after a high shutter speed to freeze the movement, but a slow shutter speed to blur the prop. There's no ideal solution other than maybe getting both aircraft in really close so that a wide angle lens can be used, but getting a Spit and a Hawk up close, stabilised... hmm, maybe not!

Thing is, I just don't think much to any of these "air show" paint schemes. I've never quite seen the point of dressing-up military aircraft like circus clowns.

Not picky at all. I congratulated Richard on two very nice shots.

Instead of blowing hot air up his arse, I took the time to actually look at the third shot: while the right wing of the Spit is in focus, the rest of the Spit is very soft. As for the Hawk, it is completely blurred.

He had the right idea, but it didn't come off for him as planned. **** happens.

Thanks for the comments, good and bad!

The idea behind this colour scheme is due to the fact that 19 squadron were the first squadron to get Spitfires in August 1938 at Duxford for the Battle of Britain.
This year is the 70th aniversay of that event and it was an opportunity to celebrate it with the piant job, which is close to the original as we could get it.

There will be a lot of money raised for charity from this and I for one am proud to be a part of it all and have to say the paint scheme looks stunning.

We had one chance at the photo shoot, it was very close to being scrapped again on friday due to the weather and as I had not had the chance to practise this beforehand with the BBMF, I feel we did a good job.

Richard.

Well done Richard. Really difficult to get the last shot spot on. What was the photo-ship?

Congrats to all involved in the project!

Cheers

Unless you flew St Andrew's Cross with a scottish-based squadron in the late 80s, SOP is for guy up front to actually look at the a/c they are formating on. Guy in back can then take a nice photo...

TVM Ricko for sharing.

Looks good to me, I have not seen it yet, and wished I had, especially after watching 7 black painted Hawks at Waddington today......

Still I hope it makes it up here for the Show

Great photos, and I like the colour scheme - but I like 'Misdemeanour', the gloriously coloured Hunter, so there's no accounting for my taste! ;) Well done to 19 squadron and the others involved for getting it done.

Looks lovely. Not sure how you can call an historic Spitfire scheme a 'circus clown' scheme though!!

I hear that a BBMF Spitfire will be displayed in 92(F) Sqn. markings this season. It will look a whole lot better than that Hawk!

TP,

Yes I'm looking forward to seeing that QJ squadron code on the Spitfire. So where's the Hawk in Blue Diamonds colour scheme then?
