Strips & good hotels in W France

Mrs Camb has relented and suggested that we "tour around France in a little Aeroplane" rather then sit in a Benetau 38 (just the two of us!) in the BVIs in the hurricane season (mid Sept).....Girl!!
I have managed to procure a lovely Robin for the trip, and I was wondering if I might impart on your esteemed ranks to suggest suitable "sleepy" French strips close to a Relais Chateaux or other suitable good hotel in W/NW France. It is about 10 years since we last toured France in this fashion, and I'm a bit out of date......

not sure there are that many strips right next to a chateau, however one stop I would reccomend is the island of Belle Isle - getting to an island by aircraft is always a good use of it. A short taxi ride into town, and there are plenty of good hotel choices.

I am sure people will talk of Chateau la Chassagne, however that is in SE France (at least the middle bit of it)

Just a little bit away from Chateau la Chassagne is Nuits St Georges airstrip. There is a small club there, and you need to get permission from the Town Hall (i think) in Dijon to land there. I did, and had a great time. We cleared customs and refuelled at Troyes but you can get fuel at N st G. No landing fees and very relaxed

Right next door (literally) is hotel Chateau de la Berchere. Excellent informal hotel in 17th century chateau with some great rooms. If you ring them they will give you the contact details of who to contact to get permission to land. I think he is a part-owner of the hotel as well!

No restaurant at the hotel but some good ones nearby in Nuits st Georges or the local area: ask Reception for recommendations, and they will also arrange very reasonable and informal car hire.

We were there in September and there are all the vineyards (Nuits St Georges, Gevrey Chambertin etc) to visit and Beaune is very chic with a walled town. Dijon 20 mins drive.

I suggest you to land at FONTENAY-TRESIGNY LFPQ, there's a good restaurant off there in a old AF's plane le Breguet, that's no bad!:ok:

Just to thank you all for your replies.
We have booked into the Chateaux M0nhoudou (thanks Beerdrinker!) for three nights in mid September. Sounds a really delightfull spot and all the correspondance is in excellent English (which can't be bad?).
We will use that as a base and fly out to Belle Isle, Quiberon etc, we will also fly down to the Nuits St Georges airstrip (thanks eyeinthesky!) for a recce.

Glad you are going to give it a try.
As promised, I have dug out my permission to land at Nuits St Georges. It is valid for one year from the date of permission (if you ask for that rather than a single trip) should you wish to go back again.

I landed and stayed overnight at the Chateau hotel last year - simple rooms and very reasonable price. I landed with the permission of the hotel; my understanding is that the owner of the hotel is the President of the Aeroclub, and that permission from the hotel is all you need to land. Certainly I had no problem.:)
