Thought it was interesting to learn that Cirrus Aircraft have finally decided to bite the bullet and switch from Avidyne to the Garmin G1000.

Care to give out any references for this?

If they were going to do so, surely it would have been timed to coincide with the introduction of the new SR22 G3 (http://www.cirrusdesign.com/g3/avionics.aspx). It wasn't, and is unlikely, as Cirrus have a financial investment in Avidyne.

Heard it at Sun & Fun last week. It seems that they will offer both options but ultimately they realised that the glass GA industry has gone with Garmin and hence a lot schools etc. were requesting the G1000 set-up.

Personally I like the Avidyne set up but i think a poll showed most users prefer the G1000.

I don't have enough time in the G1000 (2 hours) to offer any really useful comparison. Haven't heard anything about it from Cirrus - press releases, etc - but that isn't saying much.

Are you sure you're not confusing this with Piper. They announced (http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/070417/aqtu500.html?.v=1) at Sun-n-Fun that they would be offering the G1000 as an option.

Quite sure it was Cirrus. I am aware that Piper is also moving towards Garmin even thought they have used the Avidyne for a few years now.

Who did you hear it from?

I am looking at Cirrus and Columbia with a view to possibly acquiring a machine and during conversations with various parties at Sun N'Fun I learned that it will be available shortly as an alternative to the Avidyne.

I had a look on their website and I dont see any reference. I guess they havent 'officially' announced it yet.

They guy I was speaking with was explaining that the Cirrus already has the garmin stack which is expensive and then it has the Avidyne panels mated to that stack. The Garmin G1000 would be more cost effective and more ergonomic as the stack is no longer required. Everything is controlled directly from the panel.

Also the G1000 now offers the built in flight director and the keypad input device.

Having used both and for what it is worth I far prefer the G1000.

Cirrius should give the buyer the option because after all both are just a collection of avionics and I cant see any reason why the aircraft should be designed any more or less around one system, given the volume of aircraft produced by Cirrius. However, I suspect if there is the close corporate connection between Cirrius and Avidyne suggested that may be one very good reason for their favouring Avidyne for some time to come!

Another reason for sticking with Avidyne is to keep the faith with existing customers. Now that Columbia, Eclipse and Piper have dropped them I can't see how they could survive without Cirrus, so who would pick up the maintenance of the existing fleet? Plummeting resale values would hardly be good for new sales.

Thats very true.. However like everything in life I guess you have to ultimately decide if you really did back the right horse.

I guess in the long run the Cirrus aircraft business is more important than any investment they may have in an avionics company.

The fact that the G1000 setup is starting to appear in light jets makes the transistion more appealing for both owners and schools.

Yes, including their own cirrus 'the jet'...

To quote samusi01, care to give any references for this? I don't see any mention of the G1000 on the-jet (http://www.the-jet.com/infobase.html) website. Perhaps they'll jump a generation and go for synthetic vision based avionics.

I was only refering to the SR series. I do not know anything about the jet.

Well, it took a year but I am glad to see my source for this information was indeed accurate.

Some interesting options in that panel.

I have heard a rumor that "the jet" will also use the G1000. Look at the issues Eclipse now face. I suspect they may have some regrets regarding avionics choice.

The G1000 in the mustang has really worked out quite nicely and the economies of scale are now apparent as the likes of TBM, Honda, Embraer, Quest, etc get on board.

Garmin also have the cheapest certified synthetic vision option which is now available as an upgrade to the G1000 setup.

Garmin is in good shape moving forward.
