Anyone know anything about working on the Isle of Man? The ATCO job seems an attractive one - top of scale about 64k and low income tax

I worked there for about 18 months, not at the airport though.

The place got to me after a while, I felt very trapped, after all it's only 9 miles by about 40. You want to go anywhere and it's a flight or a ferry. The tax is very low though, when I was there it was 15% basic, 20% top, and married couples could use the partners allowance (About 5K each anyway) (If the partner didn't work that is) Everything else is more expensive - leccy, gas, fuel, food, phone etc.

And you can regularly be trapped on the island for a week at a time with no one coming on or off. Just imagine what the shops are like then.

I would not go back.

Don't forget the lack of a speed limit during TT week

Yeah, I live at the north end of the island. The tax is currently 10% basic, 18% above with a £8500 earnt before being taxable.

There are speed limits, though only in towns, though they're rarely enforced - I've been driving for 4 years and I've seen one police radar guy.

The airport is very quiet though, heh.

However, yeah, everything is more expensive, there is barely any nightlife, there is 3 cinema screens, one bowling alley (I'm not making this up :P), and the locals don't generally have a brain cell to share between them.

Reminds me of the story about the manx airlines pilot who was allegedly dismissed for saying
'Welcome to the Isle of Man, the local time is half past three, the local date is 1956'

I take it you're originally from 'across' EHkodiak?

I've heard it described (by someone who lived and worked there) as "75,000 drunks clinging to the most beatiful rock in the British Isles". :E

Sounds about right, small island life would do me in too

Don't let my wife hear you say that about the locals EH, she'll have you guts for garters!! :O

I lived the for three years flying for what was then Manx Airlines, it's a very nice place and you don't tend to feel trapped, wide open country side and even a couple of quite large ish mountains!

It's got some great golf as well. :ok:

Shopping is quite limited though, highlite of the saturday morning was going to M&S, it's the biggest shop on the island. So the wife will have to get the Manchester flight or Liverpool ferry for some retail therapy once in a while.

Oh ye, medical. If it's a complicated problem they normally send you "across"
as they like to call it.

All in all it's great for a few years or somewhere to retire to.

No, I'm a Manxy too! Not one of these 'comeovers'. I'm in my twenties, so there isn't really much to do over here. Currently at university though.
