I have to fly to Gleneagles at the end of the month. Which would be the best airfield to fly into in a Bonanza (700 metres).

I'd recommend Perth, EGPT
21/03 853m, tarmac
10/28 609m, tarmac
34/16 620m, grass.

Used to be an ATCO there & I've flown C310's off all 3, though 10/28 is a bit tight! Hangarage is normally available too.

Thanks. I had spotted Perth but was just checking if there was anything nearer that anyone knew off. That one will do fine.

I think Strathallan might be nearer but only 600m & no facilities that I know of. Perth's got a VOR/DME by the threshold rwy 21 too.

I would be getting a bit twitchy at 600 metres!

Stuart, my old friend used to own an A36 (285hp) and had no problems lifting six people out of Glenforsa which is 700m grass, and had loads of room to spare. Strathallan shouldn't be a problem; but do your sums!

Not so much getting in, but getting out again after all that fine food! Have fun!

Thanks.

I have been into Mull with 6 on board and too didnt use much more than two thirds runway but it was cold, and 4 of my passengers were kids.

My Bonanza is also a low noise model which is 300hp but a different prop which makes it a bit less sprightly to get off but a little bit faster in the cruise so I am always careful. In fact I try to be a bit cautious anyway :)

I am going to speak to them as it sounds a great option.

It's just a plain old VOR at perth now, no DME (unless they've put one in while I've been away)

I went into (and out of) Strathallan yesterday (Friday) for the first time, and personally was disappointed in the quality of the surface. Although level, dry and firm, the ground felt rough, the grass was tussocky with the tussocks being about 4-6in in length.

I was in a Chipmunk so length was no problem (ooh err missus), but it felt as though merry h*ll was being knocked out of the undercarriage. Won't be going back.

In terms of surface quality, it ain't no Glenforsa, that's for sure....

Thanks for that. I will steer clear as I love my Bonanza a little too much for that!
