The airport took ages to be comissioned due to funding. It was constructed step by step each time funds were approved.

Yesterday (Aug. 10th) it started operations officially with the first Olympic Airlines ATR executing the first scheduled flight from Athens.

It's one more of Greece's "aircraft carrier" type airfields with tricky (gusty) crosswinds from the mountain range to the North.

Kalymnos is just North of Kos (LGKO) island which is reachable by most international holiday flights.

I will fly there tomorrow and will have more pictures after the weekend.

Album of pictures from recent years while it was under construction :

ILS ???? on a Greek island no thank you !!.

The islands are the only place that I now get to fly a visual approach most have a VOR let down but it's much more fun to kick out the automatics and look out of the window ( big reality display in magenta line kid speak).

Santorini tomorrow and Skiathos on friday both places that good old hand flying is the only way to go.

Kyprianos was it you flying the TB20 that I met at Zakinthos a few weeks back ?

You know guys i love flying to the islands but to tell you the truth its really demanding when i take off from athens to go to santorini,i barely reach TOC and here we go,start descent!!Flying visually though is really nice, unlike you guys i have the chance to watch outside the window a lot:) Thats the good part of flying for a greek airline!!! But i really like flying the ILS at MUN or at FCO,using RNAV transitions in Germany and so on. I wish you happy landings at the greek islands

A&C I bet you enjoy these rides when coming out of the heavily controlled and busy environment of Europe's big airports with your LNAV & VNAV's flying all the ay. I see you guys sometimes from the air or apron and you certainly enjoy some stick and rudder flying when you come to our islands doing these breaks to visual approach. Skiathos, Santorini, Kos, Mikonos (where I am now), Rodos, Kerkira, Mitilini and Samos (the winner ;) ) just to name few.

No, in Zakinthos it was a friend who flew in from chania Souda. I own the (also) red & white registered SX-ATK.

The place we get closest to you guys is Skiathos when they have three of you in the apron and our (GA) parking spaces (3 available) are just below your nose if you happen to be the first jet parked on the north side. It's cool to observe a (say) B757 startup & taxi so close.

Offcourse there are other times when GA parking spaces seize to exist and (with the blessing of airport authority!) we squeeze in wherever they can fit us, as long as we stay clear of jet blast.

LGMK is the one place I've been to where one has to pay for fuel in cash.

I wonder why that might be :)

I'll be down there (LGKR) in 2wks' time.

No, just locate some 18-30 Club huts at the end of the runway. These days, there will be copious amounts of flesh to run into without damage :)

I have just joined Rhodos aeroclub - can you tell me if VFR charts exist of the Dodecanese areas of the Greek islands and if so where to get them?

There are no VFR charts for Greece. You have to use the American ONC/TPC charts; the relevant ONC chart is ref G3 and the date is 1998!

You can get ONC charts from some UK pilot shops, and

http://www.maptown.com/worldaviation/onc_main.html
http://map.aeroplanner.com/mapping/chart/smartchart.cfm

The 2nd one above does downloads too, I think. Otherwise, I have the G3 chart in TIFF digital form; PM me if you want it.

The chart shows danger areas (out of date obviously) but no CAS.
