North Weald 90th Anniversary Fly-in

Sunday 20 August 2006

Come and join us at North Weald to celebrate the airfield's 90th anniversary - fly in or drive in.

First opened in 1916 to combat Zeppelins attacking London, the airfield played a key role during the Battle of Britain. Today, the classic sound of the Rolls Royce Merlin is still heard – a Spitfire PRXI and P51 Mustang are based on the field along with a P40 Kittyhawk. Kennet Aviation also have a Griffon-powered Seafire F17, Skyraider and several classic British jets – the Venom, Jet Provost, Hunter and Gnat operating from their hangar. There is a thriving GA community, including several jet groups, and gliders are flown over the winter months.

Two F16s from 331 and 332 Squadrons of the Norwegian Air Force are due to attend, flown by their squadron commanders. These squadrons were based at NW during the war flying Spitfires. A party of Norwegian veterans are also attending, and there will be a dedicated veterans' marquee on site. The F16s will be departing at 1500.

The RAF presence is a Tucano from 72 Squadron, which also retains strong links with the field. 111 Squadron will hopefully be flying in a Tornado, but this has still to be confirmed.

There will be a free shuttle bus from the airfield to the North Weald Museum. The Squadron's legendary barbequed burgers will be available all day too.

For pilots flying in, there will be no landing fee, but PPR is essential on 01992 524510 to obtain a landing slot.

The tower will be operating a Flight Information Service. 100LL and Jet A1 available at competitive prices! The airfield is open from 0900 to 1900. Runway 02/20 will be in use, with 13/31 reserved for parking and the fuelling point.

Circuit height 800 feet QFE, left hand for 02 and right hand for 20. The airfield is situated under the Stansted CTA which starts at 1500 feet. Stapleford's zone is just to the South.

For those wishing to drive in, there is an entrance fee of £5 per person. £2 of this will be donated to local charities.

The recent news concerning North Weald's future is positive, but we are still by no means safe, although The Squadron's buildings have just received a fresh coat of paint. So, any support on the day will help to get the message across that we want to be here for another 90 years at least!

We look forward to seeing you there.

I'll try and be there! It's been in my diary for months, so there shouldn't be any excuse ... whether or not I can fly is another matter though.

The Norwegian F16s and veterans arrived yesterday, including the Chief of the Air Staff. Unfortunately the RAf didn't! The Tornado went tech and the Tucano had to turn back because of the weather.

A taster for what you can see at the weekend...

It was a great time. Good to see it so busy, hope that gives a lot of support to NW. I drove in, couldn't easily get anything to fly in.

However they could have made more money if the BBQ had enough rolls for the burgers! Annoying having waited for 20 minutes in the queue before they realise too, an we have to go hungry.

A big well done to those who helped celebrate NW's 90th. It's a shame the airfield/council didn't do anything ... At least the chaps in ops got the place looking smart. :ok:

Why couldn't more people be around to make it a 'whole airfield' event though?!

We did our best to do something to honour the Norwegians (and please the Air Cadets)! I handed over a whole lot of photos to the Museum today too for the follow-up publicity.

A couple of the Aerostars were out playing this morning. A pity it couldn't have been yesterday.
