JAA PPL 5 year renewal

Is the 5-year renewal of the JAA PPL license purely an admin task where you fill out a form and pay the CAA money?

And does it matter what the state of your ratings/medical is at the time it expires? In my case it's likely I might have neither valid at the time.

I've got my 5 year renewal coming up next year so I thought I'd look up the rules via the CAA site (Safety regulations / personnel licencing section)

The following is copied from LASORS section C5;

C5 LICENCE RE-ISSUE
C5.1 LICENCE RE-ISSUE
For a licence to be valid, a pilot must hold a current
medical certificate appropriate to the licence held, and
have a valid aircraft rating.
Note for UK BCPL(A) Holders
The medical certificate required for the re-issue of a UK
BCPL(A) shall be a JAR-FCL Class 1 medical
certificate.
Applicants may apply for the re-issue of a licence within
a period of 60 days prior to the expiry date of the
licence.
Holders of a lifetime UK PPL should note that the
licence itself is un-expiring, but the privileges conferred
by it, and by any ratings in it, may only be exercised
when the licence and the appropriate ratings are valid.
Re-validation or renewal of the appropriate rating(s) is
specified in Section F. Details to revalidate or renew a
FRTOL (if held) are specified in Section B.
A UK National or JAR-FCL Pilot’s Licence will be
re-issued for a further period (5 or 10 year validity as
appropriate to the licence held) subject to meeting the
following:-
1) Hold a medical certificate appropriate to the
licence being re-issued valid for the first day of
issue of the new licence.
2) Have held a valid Certificate of Test, Certificate of
Experience or Certificate of Revalidation for any
type/class rating that has not expired by more than
5 years*.

To summarize...

Yes, it's just a paperwork exercise. Fill in two forms from the CAA website and send a cheque.

But... you will be required to certify that you have a current rating (and they will check their records anyway), and provide a copy of your medical. Otherwise you can get the license reissued when you get the rating & medical back.

I have a further question..

I am a JAA PPL holder and a JAA CPL holder

My PPL expired end of last month, my SEP rating is current.

Does the CPL cover the privaledges of the PPL i.e. I know I can flight instruct in a SEP but am i am not allowed to private hire and take my friend up flying... is this true

various other examiners and instructors have told me this.. so i am unsure
have writtent o the CAA but yet to receive reply

The CPL includes all the privileges of the PPL; but you can also make money out of flying.

If you need to ask about your 5 yearly renewal then you need to get some time in,

how can u expect to be even vaguely competent after 5 years off?

Surely you cant just ignore your flying for 5 years and get a renewal by throwing money at it, please tell me this is true????

If so, it sums up the civvy world, money can solve even the biggest lack of ability.

yes i was a FI now I am a FO, i asked 3 FIs and 2 examiners and got 3 different stories, hence i decided to ask the majority.

I have learnt alot in my career so far but this is the most important thing i have learnt :

the day you think you know or should know it all is the day you give your licence up.

No one knows everything trust me, so please do not shoot me down for asking, seems common sense to me to ask..

Please note that you cannot hold both a JAR-FCL CPL(A) and a JAR-FCL PPL(A) - it's one or the other!

FIs should indeed know the basic revalidation and renewal criteria!

The 5-year re-issue (which the CAA incorrectly term 'renewal') I raised with the relevant minster when the original CAA Regulatory Impact Statement was circulated - they tried to show that maintaining a PPL would be cheaper under JAR-FCL....:rolleyes:
