Garmin GPS 96c [Archive]

Hi all,
Just a quick one to see if anyone has the above mentioned GPS unit. Im looking in to purchasing one and would appreciate any feedback from people who already have one.
Are they as good as they are made out to be, worth the £400 etc
Any feedback would be much appreciated

Yes they're worth the £400, good little unit. I have one as a yoke-mounted back up GPS. The screen is too small though so if you can afford it get a 296 instead.

I've just sold my 96C and brought a Lowrance Airmap 600C.
the 96C is a very good unit, but the 600C has Terrain Awareness, a bigger screen, better mounts etc.. and Delahay’s doing them for £380 with delivery!

Is the terrain awareness valid in the UK?

How are charts updated - is there a subscription service?, are they downloaded to a PC first then uploaded? Is this via memory cards or via USB?

Can trip data be logged and downloaded in a standard format?

I realise I could pose these question to a supplier but it is generally preferable to hear from a real world user.

I’ve got the international version. This has terrain for Europe.

The charts are updated via Jeppesen subscription, downloaded to PC then transferred to MMC using Jeppesen un-lock software (will only work on MMC supplied).

Routes and trails can be saved on the unit then up/down loaded via the MMC reader (supplied). This is in a .USR format used by Lowrance.
I generate my routes and load the trails into MemoryMap as this Lowrance compatible. You can also download routed via Jeppesen FlitetStar, but this only works from a serial cable (limitation of FlitetStar), but I’ve yet to test this.

My main issues with the unit are:
There is no MATZ information. (Apparently Lowrance are looking into this.)
And the base map hasn’t got much information (again, according to Delahays there will be a ‘FreedomMap + Terrain MMC available soon). Freedom maps have street level detail – a bit like the automotive software for Garmin units.
