Hello there.

General Aviation Lecture

Am I Crazy?

Tuesday 4th July 2006

Air Cdre Owen Truelove, Chairman, Glide NZ Ltd

In the autumn of 2004 Owen Truelove flew his Stemme 10V motor glider from the UK to New Zealand. This was the first by a motor glider, and the unique attributes of the Stemme for such a flight will be discussed. The talk will cover how he justified the flight, and undertook the planning and the clearances. The route was subject to change for many reasons. He will highlight the General Aviation aspects of the flight and also the soaring that was disappointing. He experienced highs and lows on the flight and these will be unveiled. This will include fuel issues and air traffic clearances. There will be a chance to see future designs of motor gliders, and discuss the merits of these machines.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Owen Truelove was a RAF Engineering Officer for 33 years. His last appointment was as Director of Aircraft Engineering, responsible for Reliability and Maintainability policy, and the Logistic Support of new Weapon Systems. His aircraft maintenance tours were with the Vulcan and Hunter aircraft, and also the F111K. He also spent much time involved with the Maintenance and Safety engineering of Nuclear Weapons. After the RAF he worked as a Defence and Logistics Consultant, running his own company, and as Chairman of LSC Ltd; he was also a Director of Schlumberger Technologies, a consultant to Computer Associates, and significantly the UK Consultant to the Boeing Defense and Space Group. He has flown gliders since 1954. He was a gliding instructor within the RAFGSA and the ATC. He is still waiting to get the third diamond for his FAI Gliding Badge, but holds UK and NZ PPLs, and is a qualified Gliding Instructor in both the UK and NZ.

Might one please ask how much it will cost for a non-RAeS member to attend and whether one can pay on arrival?

Broomstick.
