Looks like the standard USAF Marshmallow Toasting Fork.

Simply stick Marshmallows on the spikes, spray a touch of Avtur and ignite, pass boom down to recieving aircraft, and have one happy flight desk with lots of lovely toasted Marshmallows.:)

:) it's just been bugging me because i can't work out what it could be, i think the aircraft is a KC135 i think, if that helps.

Reckon so (http://pdf.aiaa.org/preview/1983/PV1983_2688.pdf). Utter nonsense, as you astutely point out.

Not meant to be a wind up, but a question from a non-engineer type:

Why utter nonsense?

most pilots spend their career trying to avoid icing - flying + icing = not flying so well anymore, extra weight and buggered aerodynamics...

test pilots however pay for the chance to fly amazing new machines first by having to do all manner of crazy (but nessecary for the rest of us - thanks guys) testing

Prototype for our new, secret weather weapon. See how it did last year as a hurricane generator?! Get the center part spinning at a gazillion rpm and viola!

Shhhh!

Isn't this particular B-777 "British Airways' B-777"?

Of course it is also used for chemtrail laying to subjugate the Amreican populace. This is usually done at night from Area 51 using unmarked Boei....aaarrgh....black Omegas!

Believe a similar device was used to test for airframe anti-icing on an ATR 72 or similar after one crashed, was on one of the Discovery channels a while ago.

Boscombe Down used to have a Canberra modified with a water spray bar for the same purpose.

Lets hope they remember to flush out the plumbing before they start using her for refuelling again eh!
