Keeping a PFA type out of the UK

Just say I wanted to keep a J3 cub on floats in Italy. Is that possible? Would it have to go on the Italian register or could it somehow have its UK maintenance sched signed off over there?

Why not ask the Italian CAA? You're more likely to get the correct answer than asking people on a public forum :-)

Or failing that, ask the UK CAA or the UK PFA:ok:

I know my PFA inspector goes over to the south of France once a year to do the permit on a G reg over there, so I guess it's possible (may be a slight bending of the rules but if it works!).

From the point of view of keeping the permit valid, the annual would have to be signed off by a PFA inspector. You could ask them if they would accept a local LAME or equivalent, or invite a UK one out for a week's holiday:)

From the Italian POV; they are signatries to the ECAC agreement recognizing amateur-built aircraft. There is an "AIC" on the matter which I'll try to look up.

I know that there is no formality for short visits. The UK limits foreign homebuilts to 28 days nominally.

{Editted to add} I've tried the Italian AIS on http://www.enav.it/aip/aip_eng.asp# and can't get a response. You may have better luck than me finding the AIC.

Just say that your aircraft is allowed to remain on the UK PFA system while 'residing' in Italy (don't think it is, sorry, but check with PFA HQ, first) and just say it needs its Permit renewing...:)

I have looked at the AIC at http://www.enav.it/aip/publications/documents/AIC_A_2000_06.pdf
It exempts homebuilts with permits to fly from the EC from any restrictions without any time limits.
But a J3 isn't a homebuilt (unless its a Wag Aero Cubby), so wouldn't get in on that exemption. Factory built aircraft on permits are treated as a bit of an oddity in some countries. France used to be awkward about them, less so now.
The Italian "Club Aviazione Popolare" (PFA equivalent) may be able to help.
