Dear all,

Just wondering why noise abatement departure procedures could made aircraft burn more fuel?

Cheers...

Having to fly at speeds less than optimum and with flap extended to a height higher than optimum causes more fuel to be burnt.

Cleaning the aircraft up at the minimum flap retraction height (often 800ft AGL) and accelerating the the most efficient climb speed (260 to 280 Kt as a general figure) would be most efficient.

Noise abatement procedures which require a speed of about 170 to 190Kt with flap extended until 3000ft AGL costs fuel.

DFC

Take a look at ICAO recommended noise abatement procedures NADP-1 and NADP-2 for further detail. (Doc 8168 Vol 1 Part V)
