A drunken, 66-year-old pilot has caused havoc at Frankfurt airport, one of Europe's biggest, delaying dozens of flights, German police said.

The pilot had an alcohol level of 1.74 grammes per liter of blood in his body, according to the police.

They said he took off from Egelsbach near Frankfurt on Thursday in a light aircraft, but air traffic controllers soon noticed that he was not heeding their instructions.

He tried and failed to land at nearby Hahn in poor weather conditions and then seemed to lose his direction.

A police helicopter eventually escorted the plane to land safely at Frankfurt international airport where both the pilot and the student were arrested.

The pilot is due to appear in court on charges of endangering air traffic safety.

About 30 planes from the German carrier Lufthansa alone were delayed because of his antics.

Under German law the affected airlines could claim compensation from the pilot.

This is not the first time and will not be the last these are the one we here about.

A number of years ago a Cessna 150 transited the Channel Islands Zone and the pilot was singing a lot of the time on an open transmission.:mad: :mad:

The aircraft landed a Bournemouth where the pilot was arrested he was also drunk in charge of aircraft.

The pilot was well know by some of the aviation world his nick name was the flying vet.:sad: :sad:

He recentally tried to fly a Piper Cub to Australia? but crashed on route, this time it was the aircraft and not the pilot being D.I.C:ok:

Back in 1975 a Cessna 150 tried to take off at Lessay a grass strip in Normandie France, to fly back to Jersey at 0400 with two people on board but crashed on take of killing the passenger.::E :E

I congratulate the flying vet for doing the flight.

You can do these things when you have the money and the time.

He lived in the Channel Islands for a number of years so some of us did get to know of him.

So well done for that flight but the time he flew through the Channel Islands a number of years before i can not congratulate for.

I have experienced an light aircraft crash where the two people we drunk and one was killed and the other live but it is not a nice sight to see at 7 am after a club outing.

The club got banned from this airfield for a number of years after.

May be he had seen the light and become tea total??

Flying while drunk is a bloody stupid thing to do.

Although, having found the guy on google and read a account of his trip to Australia, I have a fair bit of respect for the guy. He hasn't killed himself or anyone else yet and most importantly, he has a sense of humour by the sund of things.
