I am likely to be moving to the Wakefield area in the next few months and have been looking for suitable airfields and clubs from which to fly. I am a low hours PPL and looking to hire club aircraft in the short term.

It would appear that the nearest airfield of significance excl. Leeds/Bradford is Sherburn in Elmet although I am aware that there is a small airfield (Crossland Moor) near Huddersfield.

Can't find much on the web on either so any recommendations from pilots in the West Yorks area much appreciated.

I spent a while shuttling from Wakefield to Sherburn and back. Its a good club, with plently of aircraft, instructors, and a new interior.
Things can get a bit busy. Its an easy drive up. Plenty of info at:

Not been to Crossland Moor

There's no microlight school at Crosland Moor.
Have you tried Sandtoft ??
Sherburn has C150/C152's, PA 28's, also a CAP 10 and their rates are the lowest in the area.
Sheffield may have a 172.

'Them thar hills' may well be right about Sandtoft.

From my memory, there's a couple of places at Humberside (Frank Morgan's (http://www.flyatfranks.co.uk/aircraft.php#gatzs) or the Humber Flying Club (http://www.humberflyingclub.co.uk/price.htm)) that you could try. I don't recall there being one at EGSY, I believe Yorkshire Flight Training only have a venerable 150 from Mr Cessna's stable.

Multiflight are quite dear but, on the flip side, there would be no annual membership and it depends on how far you'd end up having to travel. Although I'd be surprised if there isn't another 172 somewhere nearby...

Leezy-
I've been looking for a 172 around and about West Yorkshire and I think a couple of schools at Humberside seem to be the only options...(except for multiflight like you say...)

Ok, Its East Yorkshire, not West, but Hull Aero Club (http://www.hullaeroclub.co.uk/index.html) seem to have a C-172 for hire.

Brooklands

NB they're not based at Humberside, but a small grass airfield near Beverley

Sheffield City Flying School have C172 (G-BRWX)

It has been converted to run on Jet-A1 and nice to fly. No carb heat, and frugal running costs.

Nice airport too.

There is definitely still activity at Crosland Moor - both microlight and not-so-microlight. Its only about 2nm from where I live but I've never been there on a visit. Must do a fly in one day.

Sheffield Aero Club (http://www.sheffair.f9.co.uk) at Netherthorpe (not far from M1, approx 35 mins drive from Wakefield).

Various aircraft type available including a very nice C172, G-SEVE.

Lovely grass airfield with great club atmosphere.

If you are looking at solo hire post ppl then you'd be hard pushed to beat SAC.
The fleet of 14 (iirc) pa28's & C150's that are available, with a relatively easy flexible booking system.
ie You could say book an aircraft all day & then cancel with more than 24 hours notice & incur NO charge.
Or book an aircraft all day & only pay for your flying hours.
The only downside I can think of is, if you do want an aircraft all day then you do need to book a few weeks in advance.
Friendly/ helpful desk staff.
Lovely new clubhouse.
What more could you want? Cheap fuel, well relatively one of the cheapest in the country I think.

Thanks for the replies folks.

Forgot to mention that I learnt to fly in a PA28 and for the time being am more comfortable with them which I know limits me a bit (although I agree that G-SEVE does look rather nice - does it have glass cockpit?).

Does Sheffield City Airport have any flying schools that hire PA28s with good availability?

So far Sherburn appears to be the best bet...?

Im currently doing my PPL at Sherburn and have to say that it is an excellent and like has been said before, the solo hire rates for the aircraft are the lowest around as it is a non profit5 organisation. There is an excellent club atmosphere and the aircraft are all in good order. If you were hireing a club aircraft you would be better to hire one of the warriors from Sherburn as opposed to the cadets as they are better equiped. At the last Club Meeting it was said that the posibilty of a Diesel 172 or Pa28 was being looked at by the club, also we only have 1 cessna now as one has been sold as of last month.

Why not come and have a look around Sherburn?
