I have just been looking at a copy of Flyer from about ten years ago and there is a small article about a parachute device that fits on to the aircraft, if the engine fails or there is a structural failure you press a button and a colossal parachute fires and deploys, allowing you to merrily float down. Has anyone heard of this, was it ever developed?

I believe there on an incident quite recently, maybe within the past month somewhere in the US where this or a similar device was used for real and the crew were all OK,
Sorry I can't be of more help but Google may be able to help you out :ok:

The February issue LOOP has a bit about a Cirrus deploying a parachute after a serious icing problem, apparently the descent was "wild" and they lost a door.
