I understand that unlike VFR flying, an instrument rating obtained from the FAA cannot be used to fly in Europe. Maybe someone could shed some light on this for me as it is not clear to me why this is the case. I mean, surely the methods used for instrument flying as well as the instruments in aircraft must be fairly universal. Or is it is that the procedures used in Europe are very different to that used in the US.

With no useful exceptions, if you want to use an FAA IR to give you IFR privileges, you need an N-registered aircraft.

Then you can fly around Europe.

So you see fly-sd our own CAA think that if you fly a "G" reg aircraft you are unsafe to be IFR. If however you put the same aircraft on the "N" register it makes all the difference and you CAN fly IFR airways etc. Great over here in euroland!!!!
