Volga-Dnepr Group announced Aug. 10 that a "born again" new-build IL-76 cargo aircraft, designed to meet International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) noise and emissions standards, has completed its first test flight.
The 50-ton freighter completed a 30-minute test flight at an altitude of 700 meters (2,297 feet), said the Moscow-based air cargo company, which financed the assembly of the first IL-76TD-90VD aircraft. The IL-76 modernization work is the result of four years of work with the Ilyushin Aviation Complex, TAPO and Perm Motor Plant, Volga-Dnepr said.
The new Perm-built PS-90A-76 engines and other improvements allow the venerable IL-76 to remain in the cargo business, Volga-Dnepr said. "The aircraft has been born again thanks to new engines and new digital avionics and will now be able to continue to serve our customers for as long as another 20 years. Practically, the modernized aircraft will be the only civil aircraft in the world in the 30-50 tons market segment capable of transporting oversize cargo to any airport," Andrei Pakhomov, the general director of Volga-Dnepr-Leasing, said in a statement
