Saw unusual black Dash 8 in Canadian Forces markings. Had a rather long nose extension. Anyone have an idea what it was up in KRAP?

Probably a navigation trainer. See:

Yep it would be the Nav trainer ie used for training navigators. However, it is not black but grey. I think if it gets wet it tends to look darker than it actually is. KRAP is not too far from Winnipeg where it is based.

Yep that's what it looked like. It was definitely black though. No mistake about that. And no it wasn't raining.
Thanks for the quick reply guys.

Maybe it was the Batplane!:D

One was painted a deep, deep blue (looks black from a distance) to celebrate the anniversary of the squadron either last year or the year before.

Or maybe it was a covert-ops special for executive transport of JTF-2! :D

The black one is part of our stealth program.

They don't use any stealth technology, (budget cut-backs), so the pilots cover their eyes with their hands and repeat 'you can't see me, you can't see me'. The black paint, just makes them feel better. Must work though, haven't lost one yet!

:O Gentlmen, the CF Dash 8 you are refering to are flown by 402 "City of Winnipeg" Squadron. Based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. the squardron has 4 aircraft, 3 in air defense grey livery and one painted high visiblity dark blue, the dark blue livery is the current colour for all training aircraft like the Dash 8 and the Harvard 2. The long nose is the radome for the radar. Each aircraft has navigator training stations in the back and they are equipped with auxilliary fuel tanks. They are Dash 8 - 100 models. Underpowered.

Flew over the largely empty ramp yesterday. The rain had finally let up after a week, and there was a pair of dashes, with the sun just strong enough that you could see that it was blue.

Not just blue but :"high visiblity dark blue".:D

When there's two dashes, and one herc on the ramp, everything is high visability.

Nothing about WG could be described as 'high visibility" over the past couple of days. ;)
