Morning chaps,

Question for you....

About 11 years ago whilst at Cranwell on a UAS liaison visit, one of the Flt showed a video of various fast jet clips backed by the Whitesnake ditty 'Here I go again'. Apparently it was compiled by the press chaps toward the end of the skirmish. Does anyone know where I could find this video to download?

Thanks for any info

Kaimes

The same question was raised on this forum not so long ago and from memory the conclusion was that it isn't on the web yet. There was a second one done to a Phil Collins soundtrack plus various out-takes from the journos. The BBC also did one to an Eminen track for Telic.

I have a copy of the video - think I nicked it from Cranwell...... ;)

I'll see if I can somehow turn it into a digital copy if required or I can run off a copy on VHS.

Stop Start,

Is that the video colloquially known as the "Boys From Bahrain" compiled by GMTV? It has a CVR of a GR1 on an attack run on the early days of the air war followed by various outtakes of various bomber mates looking 'tired and emotional'.

I saw it several years ago and have been desperate to get hold of a copy. Any gen would be gratefully recieved.

Just had a look at the vid - first bit is "The Boys From Bahrain" - lots of GR1 stuff but no commentary, just some plinky music over the top. Quite a few clips of "the chaps" but unfortunately no audio of what they're saying. The second bit is the TV-am clip: Jags, Buccs etc etc to Whitesnake's "Here I Go Again On my Own". There's no commentary on it all or any CVR, sorry.

I'll see if I can burn it off onto DVD

My VHS copy is very poor so could do with an improved version. I showed it to the troops pre-Telic and it really caught their imagination. Quite why the RAF doesn't of it's own volition make more of these is beyond me.

The video I have is followed by a documentary piece on, from recollection, XV Sqn and then some general footage which culminates with the TIALD film of a transport plane being hit with the words 'Gotcha yer b*****d!'. Great stuff.

I have a copy of the original TV am video,
although its about the 4th copy quality!

I have the kit to transfer onto DVD and then burn them off
if anyone has a mint version on vhs!
There might be a copyright issue however,
as there is Phil Collins and the people that look after
the music of Whitesnake might have something to say
as the video was never made for public consumption!

Anyone know of the legal issues here?
I am willing to do it if there seems to be no snags
with this and also the proceeds go to the PPRuNe
fund?

Great footage of the Jaguars and Banana Jets
also out takes of the press are hilarious

but the best has to be the slow motion at night
of the GR1 on full reheat to the music of the master,
Phil Collins 'In the air tonight' on take off with the R/T
overlaid!

"Theyre all in their little beds boys, theyre all asleep"
Whoop whoop whoop

Everytime I see that I still get hairs stand up on my neck!
Awesome, just awesome!

Ive also got the pavespike videos of the Buccaneer with
Tornado LGB's which is equally excellent!
Airfields, HAS's, Bridges and dont forget the An12!!
"Gotcha yer ba**ard!" PORG what a star!

I LOVE THE WAY ON THE US SKY DISCOVERY CHANNELS
WHENEVER THERE IS A PROGRAM ON ABOUT THE F-117A
AND THE ALL SINGING AND DANCING KIT- STEALTH
TECHNOLOGY etc THEY SHOW THIS VIDEO OF
THE An-12 GETTING HIT! Allows the viewer to be drawn
into the belief if was dropped from such aircraft!

IT WAS A SELF DESIGNATED LGB FROM A BUCCANEER!
INITIATED BY THE MK 1 EYEBALL!
'Faster Lower Longer'
http://members.lycos.co.uk/buccaneer/rwong/an12_together.jpg

I know there is supposed to be no advertising on here
so if anyone has a problem with this I shall remove
the link below without hesitation or problem!
However, if you want to know a bit more about this particular
day in February 1991 and the Buccaneer self designated LGB attack,
click the link skypirate.co.uk (http://www.skypirate.co.uk)
(and all at the twilight of the Buccaneer's career!! What an aircraft)

As I said, shall remove if this upsets anyone!

Shall have to make a few phone calls
to see if that would upset anyone and if the
the response is ok, shall add those too if space
allows?

Comments and suggestions?
As I said, happy to take it on if someone can provide me
with a mint version?

Me too please.

I used to have a 15th generation copy on VHS until a girlfriend taped Eastenders over it. (She is not my girlfirend any more.)

Despite copyright laws saying pretty much that you should never copy anything, for any reason, ever; as long as you are discrete, do it for cost, not profit and restrict its distribution to military circles (ie those that are already familiar with the tape) then you are unlikely to attract the interest of any authorities. Selling DVDs of it on market stalls, on the other hand, would definitely land you in poo. Unfortunately this means no massive profits to PPRUNE or to you (although you would receive costs and an unrelated 'gift' in the form of beer or anything else suitable for your trouble if I get a copy).

Bear in mind that as the video was originally produced by TVAM, they would probably have already cleared the soundtrack rights if necessary.

Disclaimer - I am not a copyright lawyer and I would like a copy of the vid

This is something I would really like to see as well but as I'm not in the military, just an avid military aviation enthusiast, it may be difficult to get a copy after reading Max Stout's comments.

However if these issue can be overcome and a copy can be produced on DVD (or VHS come to that) then count me in please.

Just to set history straight:

First came phil collins then whitesnake, the Beeb then had to get Kate Adie involved and put out a vid to Status Quo "We're in the army now". Then out takes and general news items.

There was a secret vid about a spoof mission, don't know if it survived. Buckers and Paddy might know.

I have an original TVAM tape and no you cannot borrow it.

This brings back memories! I was one of the many in this vid! The vid was made by TV-AM as a thank you for the relationship that grew up between the tv crews and the RAF Bahrain team, (good old Tony Birtley and Mark Austin (ITV)). So it was only ever intended for internal consumption, but then it was so good that it was bound to get a wider release. I still get sweaty palms when I hear the Phil Collins and Whitesnake track. A DVD would be good, as my VHS original is wearing a little thin now and is treated as an endangered species in our house!

Never had a copy of Kate Adie vid but I can say that it was pants. Best part was the night firing of MLRS.

Just had a thought why not try and get good originals of everything together and do something professional not costly just professional. Maybe Mark or Tony could help I'm sure they know where the original tapes are kept.

Failing that maybe Stn Ed Centre (or whatever it's called these days) might be able to help out. Got some leave coming up so might be a week or so before it's sorted....

If anyone has any other bits and bobs from that era perhaps they could all be put together onto one disc? Like I said I have the "Boys from Bahrain" and the Whitesnake videos but nothing with commentary on it or any CVR.

There were 2 guys doing 'official' airborne video for the UK TV news pool during GW1 - Stroppy Jock in Bahrain & Stocko in Dhahran

There were 2 music videos made, 27 mins in total. I made & distributed many copies to guys from 17(F), 617 & XV(R) sqn and anyone at Lossie who asked. Those that know can now probably guess my identity!

Bahrains had Phil Collins, Whitesnake + ??

Sky's version from Dhahran had Huey Lewis & the News, George Michael Freedom and a couple of others. They added Bette Middler, Wind beneath My Wings as an afterthought.

I have a Sky TV News original, 1st generation copy as I worked rather closely with them & also have a 1st generation copy of the TV AM Bahrain Bits.

Because of a close, personal interest, I have most of the rest of the original material that was taken. No-one seemed much interested at the time.

Unfortunately I am in warmer climes and it's all in storage. I hope to get it out in ~Summer 05 when I shall try to get it all onto digital once I can get my video capture card working in the UK

Hope you guys can get the DVD or wait till then

OK. I can answer questions about copyright / legal stuff on this. I am an ex-mil pilot with no vested interest - just a bit of local knowledge. The video which was originally referred to is in 2 halves - the first bit with Phil Collins, the second bit with Whitesnake. It was done by TVAM. Their archive library is now owned by 2 companies - one owns news footage, the other owns the rest. The second company has the original Phil Collins stuff in high quality format, which you could run copies from under licence for private use only. I do not know where the original of the Whitesnake stuff is.

I have made enquiries about the footage -it is available at commercial rates - 8 mins of the Phil collins stuff is going to be a minimum of £1500 plus VAT. The company claims to own copyright by virtue of owning the library, although I suspect that you could make a strong case that it ought to be Crown copyright. The music is a separate issue. I would suggest that if it is for private use only, don't ask questions you don't want to hear the answer to.

In summary, bottom line is that the Phil Collins stuff is available, but expensive. Making copies of it is not strictly legal, but unlikely to get you into trouble if only used privately, especially given that the company's claim to the footage is a little tenuous (taken by RAF aircrew from RAF jets). If somebody wants to go ahead with this, I can provide appropriate contact details - preferably not in a public forum.

On a separate note, I use this stuff for presentations from time to time. If anybody has a high quality version of the original stuff, I would very much like to get hold of it. I am happy to have copies professionally produced and suggest that fees just go to RAFBF. Please don't deluge with replies requesting copies again. If I get a sufficiently high quality version, I will post info on how to get copies.

Notwithstanding cal's expert comments above I have now finally got round to copying this on DVD (it's like pulling teeth round here sometimes  ).

Started PMing interested folks but got bored of having to wait a minute between sending each one :)

Having read through the comments I should just say that although this is titled "The boys from Bahrain" I suspect it's a "sanitised" version of sorts. First half is set to some instrumental muzak as opposed to Phil collins. There are no CVRs, no clips of things going boom or such like. There are no voice tracks at all, just the muzak. The second half is the Whitesnake one. Again lots of jets hurtling about but again no CVR, anything going bang or people larking about. The thing ends with TV-am "credits".

It's possible that this isn't the vid as people remember it. That said, it is 13 minutes-odd of jets and RAF folk. If people still want a copy burning off then please PM me.

Stopstart,

From your description it appears that you have a re-mastered version. The Phil Collins bit was done by the TVAM team first and elicited some mock sulking from the Jag mates. To be fair, the TV guys took their camera to just about every bar in the place and seemed to end up in their rooms showing the video from the same evening. So doing some quick editing and adding music was a doddle for them. Anyway, the next thing we knew they'd done the Whitesnake bit (shame about all the Bucc footage, but there you go ;-) wrapped it up with a few out-takes and general mucking around.

It was never an 'official' piece of work and never distributed other than by mates.

As an aside, if you watch the GR1 bits closely, you'll see some AAA appear.
