:) hi. i wonder if anyone can tell me what the lights inside a helicopter are for. they are either red or orange and even from the ground they seem quite big. Do they assist with navigation? thanks again. ::ok:

Just read your profile and I think I ought to pop up and explain everything on a one-to-one basis!!

Seriously, I hope a pilot will respond. I do not know the answer except that navigation probably doesn't come into the equation as I know of no navigation system employing lights of that nature in an aeroplane. I wonder how many helicopters you've seen with the lights? As the lights are big it suggests they are something to do with outside, rather than inside, the helicopter.

I d say it depends on how high they are..

Could be glow from instrument lights, map reading lights or monitors.

Or as HD says reflections from outside onto the canopy.
